Overhead Line Design Engineer - Great Grid Upgrade
Joining Arup
Arup’s purpose, shared values, and collaborative approach have defined us for over 80 years, helping us shape a better world together.
Arup delivers transmission and distribution design projects globally. In the UK, our work spans the entire project lifecycle—from concept development to detailed design—supporting diverse clients, including established asset owners and innovative entrants like interconnectors and private wire schemes.
A key initiative is our joint venture with AECOM, acting as design and consenting partners for National Grid’s Great Grid Partnership. Over the next decade, this programme will modernise the UK’s electricity network, enabling renewable energy integration and supporting the net zero transition—as part of Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI). These developments will strengthen the nation’s energy infrastructure, ensuring a resilient, low-carbon future.
Roles are available across multiple UK office locations.
The Opportunity
We’re looking for Overhead Line (OHL) Design Engineers to join our growing transmission and distribution team. Ideal for early-career engineers with foundational experience or a keen interest in overhead line design, this role offers a supportive environment to develop technical expertise alongside collaborative, multidisciplinary teams.
You’ll contribute to OHL projects across voltage levels (typically 33kV–400kV+), supporting design activities, technical outputs, and professional growth while aligning with best practice in project delivery.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
