Job Overview
University Hospital Southampton (UHS) is delighted to offer an exciting opportunity to join our Long Term Ventilation (LTV) Team. This role is perfect for a Band 6 registered nurse who is passionate about providing specialist care to children and young people requiring invasive or non-invasive ventilation.
Within the Central South Coast region, our growing LTV service focuses on: ✔ Initiating safe ventilation practices ✔ Facilitating timely discharges, enabling patients to thrive in home settings ✔ Supporting diverse patient populations across inpatient, outpatient, and community care
Key Relationships
- Reports to a Band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist
- Works closely with the LTV and Sleep Team
- Collaborates across paediatrics, respiratory services, and community care
Responsibilities
Patient and Clinical Care
- Deliver direct care to children and young people with complex ventilation needs and their families.
- Lead initiation, ongoing management, and troubleshooting of ventilator therapy.
- Support timely discharges, providing post-discharge follow-up to ensure seamless transitions to community care.
- Conduct observe titration nights and analyse sleep studies during night shifts.
- Provide telephone-based clinical support to families via follow-up clinics and consultations.
Education and Training
- Educate staff, families, and caregivers on ventilation techniques, monitoring, and ongoing care.
- Develop and deliver formal and informal teaching sessions in line with professional best practice.
- Support peer-led learning and on-going professional development within the team.

Professional Engagement
- Attend consultant-led follow-up clinics at UHS to support holistic patient management.
- Engage in multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings to optimise care plans.
- Ensure adherence to Best Practice Guidelines in paediatric long-term ventilation.
Requirements
Essential Criteria
✅ Registered nurse on the NMC Register (with relevant paediatric or respiratory experience preferred). ✅ Full post-registration experience in a specialist setting (e.g., paediatrics, intensive care, or respiratory support). ✔ Post-registration qualification within specialty or equivalent experience. ✅ Completion of all Band 5 preceptorship competencies. ✅ Evidence of supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice. ✅ Currently holds a valid Paediatric Life Support (PLS) certificate. ✅ Must possess a UK driving licence to undertake home visits and community outreach.
Desirable Criteria
🔹 Registered on an MSc pathway with completed Higher Tariff Points Assessment (HTPA) competencies 🔹 Experience as a Practice Assessor or supporting learner progression/challenges 🔹 Counselling qualification or training (beneficial for family support work) 🔹 Palliative care training (due to diverse patient populations) 🔹 IT training (assists with sleep study analysis and remote monitoring) 🔹 Change Management & Clinical Practice Development skills
