Paralegal / Support Role – Human Rights & Data Breach Team
About the Role
To provide a reliable and efficient support service, primarily to a Partner and Associate Solicitor, supervising fee-earners within the Human Rights & Data Breach team. Assist with the general administration of caseloads and undertake a wide variety of paralegal and administrative tasks, including ad-hoc duties as required.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Case and Document Management
- Assist with drafting legal documents and correspondence.
- Liaise with clients, Counsel, experts, and other solicitors.
- Prepare LAA funding applications.
- Request and review evidence.
- Conduct legal research.
- Provide administrative support, including efficient billing of cases.
Database Maintenance
- Maintain and update databases of group data breach claims.
- Manipulate and analyse data within these databases.
Assistance & Emergency Handling
- In the absence of supervising fee-earners, ensure urgent matters are dealt with or referred to appropriate personnel.
Document Preparation
- Produce accurate documents from verbal or written instructions using templates and precedents.
- Undertake administrative tasks for case management.
File & Case Management
- Thorough and accurate note-taking at meetings, followed by file note preparation.
- Prepare court documents for senior fee-earner approval.
- Organise and create court and case bundles, including electronic PDF bundles.
- Attend court hearings/applications/trials when requested.
- Ensure regulatory compliance with applicable laws.

Telephone & Client Relations
- Handle client and external calls with courtesy and efficiency, especially for large group claims.
- Answer high-volume client queries relating to data breach cases.
Client Engagement
- Communicate effectively and empathetically, ensuring clients feel supported, informed, and respected.
- Provide compassionate support to vulnerable clients, adapting communication styles as needed.
- Ensure payment processing (cheques/transfers) follows firm procedures.
Filing & Record Keeping
- Maintain electronic and paper filing systems, updating records and closing/opening files when required.
Information Technology
- Leverage IT systems to deliver a cost-effective, efficient, and high-quality service.
- Microsoft Excel proficiency: Advanced functions (e.g., XLOOKUP, VLOOKUP, conditional formatting) to analyse and manage large datasets.
- Skilled in case management systems, MS Word, and Outlook.
Training & Development
- Attend firm seminars, research, and courses to stay updated.
- Ensure adequate training in office technologies to maximise productivity.
Miscellaneous Duties
- May undertake unforeseen tasks as required.
Person Specification
Essential
- Passionate about access to justice and building a career in human rights law.
- Genuine interest in human rights, especially data privacy, data breach, and information law.
- Relevant legal qualification (e.g., LLB, GDL, LPC, or equivalent).
- Demonstrates strong drafting skills for legal documentation and client correspondence.
- Experience in:
- Client record sorting and reviewing (with excellent attention to detail).
- Legal and evidential research.
- Client interviews and witness statement-taking.
- Ability to build trust and credibility with vulnerable and marginalised clients.
- Experience using IT systems (MS Word, Excel, Case Management Systems, Outlook).
- Proven ability to:
- Manage difficult client situations sensitively.
- Communicate accurately, clearly, and concisely (both verbally and in writing).
- Organise and prioritise workloads, meet strict deadlines, and maintain professionalism.
- Work independently and collaboratively in a team.

Desirable
- Experience in litigation from instructions to settlement/trial.
- Background in group actions.
- Familiarity with Legal Aid.
