About the Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen within our Parks team. We are looking for a person who is keen to work in our parks and be part of a vibrant team that covers all aspects of grounds and parks maintenance. You will work in a small team who cover award-winning Green Flag parks in Crawley, including Tilgate, Goffs and Worth Parks, as well as Broadfield. If you are keen for a new challenge, this is the place to be.

The work is often high-paced and demanding, and you will have a varied role where different tasks will be asked of you throughout the working day. You will need to have experience in ground and parks maintenance, and a keen interest in working with plants and all other aspects of horticulture and conservation site maintenance. The parks are very popular, and there is a requirement to be adaptable and flexible, as plans often change and you will be required to assist both the events and zoo teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Grass cutting, strimming and edging
  • Hoeing and weeding
  • Weed spraying (if qualified with PA 1 and 6)
  • Hedge trimming
  • Watering, planting shrubs and seasonal displays
  • Cleaning, maintaining, and simple repairs to signs and street furniture
  • Cleaning and checking (where necessary) toilets and wash hand basins
  • Snow clearing and gritting
  • Supporting with events set-ups and general assisting
  • Securing bollards, buildings and gates
  • Chipping prunings (if trained)
  • Maintaining waterways
  • Cleaning graffiti
  • Reporting any issues you can’t deal with yourself

It is expected that you will look after and maintain all equipment, machinery, tools, and vehicles.


Requirements & Responsibilities

Following personal commitment to the role, the job mandates:

  • Good customer care skills—listening to customers and addressing any issues. If resolution isn't possible, report to the Parks team leader.
  • Always calm, professional, and respectful to:
    • Park users
    • Work colleagues
    • Parks partners
    • The parks management team

Health and Safety & Safeguarding Policies

Compliance with the Council’s safety policies and procedures, including:

  • Working in a safe manner according to site risk assessments
  • Understanding the Council’s policies and procedures on health and safety
  • Sharing the Council’s safeguarding commitment—promoting welfare of children, young people, and adults at risk
  • Reporting accidents, incidents, and any dangerous occurrences
  • Using only machinery and tools you have been trained in
  • Wearing the correct uniform, safety clothes, and personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Protecting your skin from the sun
  • Clarifying your location with your line manager when working solo

Additional Information

Working Hours

  • Standard working hours (37/hour per week): Tuesday to Saturday
  • Working hours agreed with the Parks Maintenance and Conservation Manager to meet service needs.

Summer Hours

Starting at 7 am until 3 pm, including:

  • One working day finishing at 2:30 pm.

Winter Hours

Starting at 7:30 am until 3:30 pm, including:

  • One working day finishing at 3 pm.

Additionally, there will be one day per week requiring extended hours:

  • Summer: 10:30 am until 6:30 pm
  • Winter: 7:30 am until 4:30 pm

Situational extra hours may also be required outside of basic working hours, including:

  • Bank Holidays
  • Weekends & occasional evening work (with a 14% enhancement paid)
  • Full and current manual UK driving licence required.
