The Person
As a Parliamentary Reporter, you must:
- Excel in a fast-paced team environment while maintaining exquisite attention to detail
- Demonstrate exceptional English language skills (including clarity, accuracy, and grammar)
- Communicate confidently and effectively in all situations
- Show a passionate interest in Northern Ireland’s political system and how the Assembly fits into the wider political landscape
- Have strong research and verification skills for complex subjects
About the Role
The Office of the Official Report (Hansard) is responsible for:
- Producing official transcripts of Assembly sittings and committee meetings
- Providing simultaneous interpretation and translation services (particularly Irish)
- Commissioning correction services for post-session editorial review
As a Parliamentary Reporter (Hansard), you will:
- Attend and transcribe all Assembly proceedings (Plenary, Committees, and other miscellaneous events)
- Log contributions accurately, including spoken and off-microphone remarks
- Verify proper names, places, technical terms, and quotations for accuracy
- Edit transcripts in line with parliamentary procedure and Hansard standards
- Clarify ambiguous or inaudible portions through member consultation
- Coordinate with interpreters (when required) to ensure correct reporting of Irish-language contributions
- Provide advisory support to editorial staff on complex terminology
Core Responsibilities
Procedural and Editorial Duties
- Maintain an accurate timesheet of debates, identifying speakers and procedural notes
- Ensure adherence to Office reporting standards, including punctuation, editorial style, and permissibility rules
- Research proper place names, historic events, and jargon for correctness
- Edit transcripts to remove redundancies while preserving speaker intent
- Confirm agency details with members before final publication

Operational Workload
- Work within strict 75-minute deadlines per session (including late-night sittings)
- Investigate scholarly and governmental sources to resolve discrepancies
- Depute for editorial staff as required
- Abide by Assembly business schedules, which may include unannounced late shifts and invited attendance during recess periods
External Representation
- Represent the Official Report Department at cross-government meetings, including:
- British-Irish Parliamentary Assembly (BIPA)
- Managing documentation and sound files for auditing sessions
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of national/international political developments
Other Support Tasks
- Assist in preparing bound volumes of the official report
- Help with indexing, proofreading, and administrative tasks when needed
Remuneration & Working Conditions
- Post based in Parliament Buildings, Belfast
- Hybrid working policy at the discretion of service needs
- Permanent appointment with 37-hour standard week (unbroken duty may extend into nights/weekends)
- Six-month probationary period, including Access NI security checks
- Refer to Assembly timetable for leave approval and timing
Critical Qualifications & Experience

Applicants must meet one of the following:
Option 1: Formal qualifications + Experience
- Secondary school qualifications (GCSE/GCE ‘O’ levels):
- Grade A–C (A–C equivalents) in four non-language subjects
- Grade A/A in English Language*
- Two years’ cumulative but not necessarily continuous experience in:
- Editing and publishing transcripts
- Research and written report reproduction of complex matters
Option 2: Experience-Only Pathway
- Four years’ cumulative experience in the ingredients listed above.
Note: Applications with qualifications of equivalent value to the stated examples will be considered in good standing.
Selection Process
Stage 1: Job-Related Skills Test
- In-person testing (dates: 27–31 July & 3–7 August 2026).
- Assesses practical English recording abilities and comprehension.
- Passes mark is non-negotiable for proceeding to eligibility sift.
Stage 2: Eligibility Sift
- Results based exclusively on completed application forms (submit by 12:00pm, 24 July 2026).
- Successful candidates will align with essential criteria proven on their form.
Stage 3: Interview
- Dates planned for 1–3 September 2026
- Covers both essential qualifications and Assembly-related skills and behaviours.
