Job Description
Job Title: Part-Time Transportation Driver (No Benefits)
Department: Ride Line
Reports to: Transportation Coordinator
FLSA Status: Nonexempt
Salary Grade: 11A or 12A with CDL with Passenger Endorsement
2026 Wage: $22.45/$23.59 per hour
Job Summary
This position operates a transit vehicle to safely and efficiently transport passengers to and from their destinations.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Performs pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections, reports maintenance and repair needs to supervisor.
- Operates a transit vehicle to safely and efficiently transport passengers.
- Uses a tablet to see where passengers are to be picked up, dropped off and times of each.
- Picks up and drops off patrons.
- Ensures compliance with all traffic laws.
- Fills fuel tank as needed.
- Provides information to patrons regarding routes, schedules and services.
- Completes required daily paperwork and documentation in the tablet.
- Enforce the rules that are outlined in the Passenger’s Handbook.
- Follow policies in the Driver Handbook.
- Assists passengers with mobility devices with boarding and securement of devices and passengers.
- Performs related duties as assigned.

Knowledge Required By The Position
- Knowledge of program policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of traffic laws and safe driving techniques.
- Knowledge of area streets and shopping centers, hospitals, clinics and elder care centers.
- Knowledge of the Passenger’s Handbook and the Driver’s Handbook.
- Skill in the safe operation of an assigned vehicle.
- Skill in operating a tablet to perform rides.
- Skill in securement of passengers with mobility devices.
- Skill in public and interpersonal relations.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Ride Line Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include program policies and procedures and traffic laws. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
The work consists of related vehicle operation and customer service duties. Heavy traffic, heavy scheduling and inclement weather contribute to the complexity of the position.
The purpose of this position is to drive a vehicle to provide transportation services to clients. Successful performance contributes to safe and efficient provision of services.

Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, clients, medical professionals, and the general public.
Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed while driving a bus or while standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position.
- Must maintain a valid South Dakota Driver’s License.
- Must become PASS (Passenger Assistance Safety and Sensitivity) and Defensive driving certified.
Other Information
Subject to random drug/alcohol testing as required by SD DOT.
