Position Summary
Under the direction of WELL Instructors, the Tutor/Classroom Aide supports participants in the Workforce Education and Lifelong Learning (WELL) Program. WELL learners require assistance in developing reading, writing, and math skills, either in-person or remotely.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide one-on-one or group tutoring for adult learners pursuing a high school diploma or improving English Language skills.
- Maintain flexibility with work hours and instructional content.
- Work effectively in multilingual, intergenerational settings.
- Utilise technology proficiently for remote and in-person instruction.
This position reports to the WELL Associate Director of Adult Education.
Job Details
Availability: Nights and weekends required when needed. Background Checks Required: Criminal history review, child abuse clearance, and FBI fingerprinting. Funding: Grant-funded. Offer of employment conditional on passing a pre-employment drug screening. Work Arrangement: Hybrid (on-campus and remote), subject to Temple University’s approval. Duration: Subject to university and department discretion.

Required Education and Experience
- Recent completion of the HISET, GED, or ESL class within the WELL Program.
- At least one (1) year of directly related experience.
- Ability to assist with reading, math, science, English, or ESL instruction.
- An alternative combination of education and experience may be considered.
Preferred Education & Experience:
- One year of experience teaching adult literacy or related fields.
- Proficient in database software applications for program management.
Required Skills and Abilities
- Strong ability to motivate learners and relate positively to diverse adult populations.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in technology and educational resources, including:
- Internet, email
- Google Apps and MS Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Up-to-date computer applications, educational tools, and websites
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and time-management abilities.
- Experience with standard office equipment.
- Knowledge of adult education, workforce development, and career transition services.
Essential Duties
- Assist literacy instructors in classrooms.
- Build rapport with learners, analysing their academic needs.
- Deliver one-on-one tutoring support for English Language Learners or those strengthening reading, writing, and math skills (in-person or remote, ≥ eight hours weekly).
- Follow written lesson plans aligned with Pennsylvania Department of Education standards.
- Review homework or assignments to enhance tutoring/sessions.
- Attend:
- Onboarding orientation
- Tutor training sessions
- Ongoing professional development (as required)
- Help learners develop study plans, critical thinking skills, and goal strategies.
