Pastoral Support Mentor – Full-Time (Term-Time Only, 2-Year Fixed-Term Contract)

About the Role
Plumpton College is seeking a compassionate, proactive and student-focused Pastoral Support Mentor to join our team.
This vital position focuses on supporting vulnerable, disadvantaged and at-risk students, providing consistent pastoral mentoring, early intervention and practical support to help them:
- Attend college
- Engage meaningfully
- Feel safe
- Progress successfully
The Pastoral Support Mentor reports to the Student Attendance and Engagement Coordinator, collaborating closely with:
- Cohort leads
- Curriculum teams
- Specialist support services
Working within a tiered support model, your role will:
- Identify and mitigate risks of disengagement, escalation or withdrawal
- Coordinate support effectively
- Foster strong relationships that reinforce belonging, confidence and participation
This is a non-teaching pastoral role focused on improving attendance, engagement, inclusion and retention.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide one-to-one pastoral mentoring, acting as a trusted adult for vulnerable students
- Build positive relationships that foster trust, confidence and emotional well-being
- Identify early signs of disengagement, poor attendance or escalating risks
- Triage referrals and signpost students to relevant internal and external support services
- Collaborate with curriculum, attendance and support teams to enhance student participation
- Support students through transition, re-engagement and reintegration
- Maintain accurate records and contribute to intervention planning and meetings
- Deliver at least one student enrichment activity per week
- Promote equality, diversity, inclusion and safeguarding

Requirements
Essential Experience and Skills
- Demonstrated experience supporting vulnerable, disadvantaged or at-risk young people, preferably in an educational setting
- Experience of one-to-one student mentoring and support
- Familiarity with early intervention strategies, pastoral support structures and referral processes
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to build rapport quickly with students and colleagues
- Proactive problem-solving approach
- Experience managing positive behaviour for support
- Flexibility, adaptability and a student-centred approach
