Location: Guildford, Surrey
Pay: £108.00–£115.00 per hour
Hours: Monday – Friday | Full-time/Part-time
Start Date: September 26

We are currently recruiting for a committed Pastoral Support Mentor to join a specialist SEMH school.
About the School
This specialist SEMH setting supports young people who have experienced significant barriers to learning, including:
- Trauma
- Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs)
- Behavioural challenges
- Unmet emotional needs
The school provides:
- A structured, nurturing, and therapeutic environment

This role requires patience, empathy, consistency—and a genuine ability to recognise the impact of meaningful work with vulnerable young people.
The Role
As a Pastoral Support Mentor, your responsibilities will include:
- Providing intensive 1:1 and small-group pastoral and welfare support
- Supporting pupils with SEMH needs, helping them develop emotional regulation strategies
- Acting as a positive role model, promoting resilience and self-belief
- De-escalating challenging situations using trauma-informed and restorative approaches
- Supporting pupils during lessons, transitions, and unstructured times
- Contributing to individual behaviour and welfare plans
- Liaising closely with:
- Teaching staff
- SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator)
- DSL (Designated Safeguarding Lead)
- External professionals
- Monitoring wellbeing, attendance, and engagement
This role is ideal for individuals with experience in:

The Ideal Candidate
Must have:
- Experience working with young people with SEMH or behavioural needs
- Strengths in emotional resilience and consistency under pressure
- Knowledge of trauma-informed practice and restorative approaches
- Safeguarding awareness and familiarity with child protection procedures
- Ability to confidently manage and de-escalate challenging behaviour
- Patience, empathy, and passion for supporting vulnerable pupils
Desirable (but not essential):
- Team Teach or de-escalation training
