About Perton Middle School

Perton Middle School, part of the Codsmall High Federation of Schools, is a vibrant, dynamic learning environment in a semi-rural Staffordshire area near Wolverhampton. We serve students in Years 5 to 8 (ages 9–13) and focus on:

Role Overview

We are seeking an **approachable, committed Pastoral Support Officer with safeguarding knowledge to expand our student welfare team.

With guidance from Progress Coordinators, SENCOs, senior staff and tutors, you’ll facilitate preventative strategies to improve academic resilience and emotional wellbeing.

Key Responsibilities

Direct Support for Students

  • Identify barriers to learning—behaviour, social/emotional development, or external challenges—and provide targeted intervention.
  • Lead 1:1 or small-group sessions for initiatives such as:
    • Anger management
    • Raising self-esteem
    • Emotional literacy
    • Exam stress management
  • Build and maintain trusting relationships to encourage vulnerable students to engage.

Collaboration & Partnerships

  • Work with CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services), Youth Social Workers, School Nurses, and charities (e.g. Young Carers) to optimise support plans.
  • Coordinate weekly/IP (in-presence) referrals for students in need of additional intervention.
  • Attend multi-agency case conferences to share insights with parents and partnerships.

Pastoral & Administrative Duties

  • Serve on the on-call team, ensuring 24-hour urgency responses for safeguarding crises.
  • Maintain confidential but thorough records for all pastoral interventions.
  • Support bespoke programmes (e.g., group exercises, mindfulness camps) as part of broader resilience-building efforts.

Nurturing the Team

  • Provide peer support and role-model professional behaviours to Promote wellbeing across the school community.

Core Attributes

  • A passion for pastoral care and a belief in equity and access to support.
  • Strong conflict-resolution and mediation skills, with humour and empathy intact.
  • Ability to liaise confidently with parents, pupils, and external agencies.
  • Effective record-keeping and GDPR awareness the ability to protect sensitive information.

Qualifications Required

  • Qualifications or experience in psychology, counselling, social work, or education (desired but not essential).
  • DBS Enhanced Disclosure—mandatory for this safeguarding-focused role (details here).
