Role: Pastoral & Wellbeing Leader

Location: Riverbank School

Salary: In line with teacher pay scales

Hours: Full time, 08:30 – 16:30, Monday – Friday

We are looking for:

  • To teach and lead the strategic and operational leadership for pastoral care, wellbeing, behaviour, attendance, and safeguarding within Riverbank school.
  • To ensure that all pupils receive high-quality therapeutic and pastoral support that enables them to regulate, engage, and achieve positive educational and personal outcomes.
  • To support the Head Teacher in ensuring the school has a trauma-informed, therapeutic, and restorative culture, ensuring that pupils' social, emotional, and mental health needs are effectively supported within a safe and nurturing environment.

What you will be doing:

Strategic Leadership

  • Lead and develop the school's pastoral and wellbeing provision in line with the school's vision and values.
  • Contribute to whole-school improvement planning and self-evaluation.
  • Promote a therapeutic, trauma-informed, and nurturing approach across the school.
  • Monitor and evaluate the impact of wellbeing, behaviour, attendance, and engagement strategies.
  • Lead initiatives that improve pupils' social, emotional, and mental health outcomes.

Supporting Pupils

  • Oversee pastoral systems and support structures for all pupils.
  • Develop individual support plans for pupils with SEMH needs.
  • Coordinate targeted interventions to improve emotional regulation, resilience, self-esteem, and wellbeing.
  • Ensure pupils' voices are heard and incorporated into support planning.
  • Support reintegration, transition, and personalised pathways for pupils.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and nurturing school culture.
  • Build positive relationships with pupils, promoting high self-esteem and independence.
  • Adapt communication style to respond to pupils according to their individual needs.

Behaviour and Therapeutic Practice

  • Lead the implementation of restorative and therapeutic behaviour approaches.
  • Support staff in managing complex and challenging behaviours effectively.
  • Develop behaviour support plans and risk assessments where required.
  • Analyse behaviour data and implement strategies to improve outcomes.
  • Promote consistent behaviour expectations and positive relationships throughout the school.

Attendance and Engagement

  • Monitor pupil attendance and engagement.
  • Develop strategies to reduce persistent absence and school refusal.
  • Work closely with families and external agencies to remove barriers to attendance.
  • Implement personalised support programmes for pupils with emotional-based school avoidance.

Teaching & Learning

  • Maintain a teaching commitment as appropriate identifying the academic learning needs of each pupil and plan a curriculum that addresses the needs identified and is ambitious, relevant and inspiring for the learners.
  • Ensure teaching approaches meet the needs of pupils with SEMH difficulties.
  • Support staff in developing inclusive and adaptive classroom practice.
  • Teach a broad and balanced curriculum aimed at pupils achieving their full potential in all areas of learning.
  • Use IT skills to advance pupils’ learning.
  • Through observations, provide regular feedback to Headteacher on pupil progress, attainment and barriers to learning.
  • Maintain good order and discipline among pupils, managing behaviour effectively to ensure a good and safe learning environment.
  • Monitor, record and report on progress and attainment.
  • Contribute to the overall ethos, aims and work of the school.
  • Undertake any other relevant duties given by Headteacher.

Working with Staff, Parents/Carers and Relevant Professionals

  • Develop effective professional relationships with colleagues conducting yourself in a professional manner.
  • Build strong relationships with parents, carers, and families.
  • Support families in accessing services and resources that promote pupil wellbeing.
  • Ensure compliance with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety, security, safeguarding and confidentiality.
  • Share knowledge and understanding of pupils to other school staff and education, health and social care professionals, so that informed decision making can place on intervention and provision.
  • Contribute to meetings with parents and carers by providing feedback on pupil progress, attainment and barriers to learning.
  • Lead and participate in multi-agency meetings and reviews collaborating and working with colleagues and other relevant professionals within and beyond the school.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
  • Degree or equivalent qualification.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development in SEMH, safeguarding, behaviour, wellbeing, or leadership.

Essential Experience

  • Extensive experience working with children with SEMH and SEND, delivering effective and inclusive teaching.
  • Experience leading pastoral, wellbeing, behaviour, or inclusion provision.
  • Experience working with external agencies and families.
  • Experience using data to monitor and improve outcomes.

Essential Knowledge

  • Understanding of SEMH needs and associated conditions.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed and attachment-aware practice.
  • Understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures.
  • Knowledge of restorative approaches and therapeutic interventions.
  • Understanding of SEND legislation and statutory guidance.

Essential Skills

  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong leadership and organisational skills.
  • Ability to build positive and trusting relationships with vulnerable pupils.

About Us:

Timeout Children's Homes is a family run organisation which specialises in providing one to one therapeutic residential childcare for children aged 6 - 17 years who have suffered abuse and neglect in their lives, alongside with providing education to children including those in our care, focusing on the Therapeutic approach. We currently have three schools; Riverbank Primary School (Ofsted rated good with Outstanding features) which has children aged 6-11, Brearley Hall School (Ofsted rated good) and a recently opened Brookland School which is situated in a grand 19th Century Victorian house, both these secondary schools provide education to children aged 11-16. All schools have a reduced number of students to provide a 1-1 approach and provide the best level of care and education to help them excel and succeed after education.
