Full-Time Pathway Coordinator/Medical Secretary

Royal Derby Hospital Department of Medicine for the Elderly

A full-time (37.5 hours/week) opportunity has arisen for a passionate Pathway Coordinator/Medical Secretary to join an exceptional support team at one of the UK’s leading hospitals.


About the Role

You’ll be an integral part of the secretarial team within the Department of Medicine for the Elderly, providing a high-calibre medical secretarial service in strong collaboration with clinician leads.

Key to this role is the ability to:

  • Be an enthusiastic team player with sharp communication and problem-solving skills
  • Exercise tact, diplomacy, and adaptability while efficiently prioritising workloads
  • Handle a range of administrative duties under minimum supervision

Key Responsibilities

General Admin Support

  • Manage clinical correspondence, including typing and editing
  • Schedule appointments and coordinate diary management
  • Respond to telephone queries and strained communications with professionalism

Specialist Skills

  • Familiarity and application of:
    • The 18-week Royal College of Physicians two-week treatment time target (RTT) process
    • Trust Patient Access Policy
  • Proficiency in medical terminology, document creation, and record-keeping

Technical Proficiency

  • Experience and competency with MS Office, including Word, Excel, internet, and email systems
  • RSA II or equivalent qualification/qualities encouraged
  • NVQ Level III or comparable qualifications in Business and Administration preferred
  • Audio typing skills an asset (training available)

Requirements

  • Previous secretarial or administrative experience
  • Capacity to work independently as well as in collaborative team settings
  • Strong organisational and communication skills
  • Resilience to adapt fluently to varied workload demands

Desirable (but not mandatory):

  • Minute-taking experience (training provided if lacking)
  • Previous exposure to electronic health records
