Patient Care Technician
The Patient Care Technician functions as a clinical support partner, assisting the patient care team by performing various tasks and procedures as instructed by a licensed professional. Additionally, this role may include responsibilities of a Health Unit Coordinator.
About the Role
This position provides direct patient care and administrative support, ensuring smooth operations across clinical units. Key responsibilities include:

Basic Patient Care
- Assist with toileting, bathing, linen/clothing changes, ice/fresh water delivery, ambulation, and comfort measures
- Respond to patient/family requests with excellent customer service

Clinical Documentation & Collaboration
- Record patient care findings and condition changes in timely manner
- Secure qualified assistance when needed;
- Assist with transcription of physician orders and other Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) tasks

Telemetry & Specialized Procedures
- Perform telemetry duties (based on unit)
- Execute delegated plan of care according to Scope of Practice
- Complete skill-validated procedures under regulatory standards

Safety & Emergency Response
- Comply with hospital safety policies
- Act in emergencies to ensure a safe patient environment
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor patient conditions and address needs in collaboration with the RN and interdisciplinary team
- Transport medications from delivery systems to nurses on clinical units
- Format and maintain unit records, including supply organization and restocking
- Assist with specimen collection, vital signs, and patient mobility
Required Skills
- Patient Care: Mobility, hygiene, comfort measures, specimen collection
- Clinical Operations: Ability to collect and document data
- Teamwork & Communication: Collaboration with nurses, physicians, and support staff
- Computer Literacy: Documentation, pharmacy systems, and medical records
- Safe Patient Handling: Proper techniques for transfers, lifting, and mobility support
- Emergency Readiness: Ability to respond to alarms, assess needs, and act decisively

Minimum Qualifications
- Current Nursing Assistant Certification (CNA) in the state of practice (must be licensed to work in Colorado)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification for Healthcare Providers
- Basic computer literacy skills (e.g., typing, data entry)
- Excellent written and verbal communication
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior CNA experience or applicable healthcare experience
- Enrollment in a nursing school program (benefits encouraged via PEAK tuition support)
Physical Requirements
Typical demands include:
- Sight & Hearing: Read labels, equipment, assess patient needs; frequently listen to alarms/verbal instructions
- Hand Dexterity: Manipulate equipment, type documentation, prepare medications
- Mobility: Frequent walking, bending, standing—also pushing/pulling gurneys and transferring patients
- Lifting: Lifting may include heavy items or patients (full range of motion)
- Sit/Drive (if vehicle duties apply): Navigate traffic, read signs, operate vehicles

- Department: Resource Pool – St Mary’s Hospital (Intermountain Health)
- Work Schedule:
- Part-time (24 weekly hours)
- Shifts: Days, nights, and mixed (flexible availability)
- Location: St. Mary’s Regional Hospital, Grand Junction, CO
- Benefits Eligible: ✓
Compensation:
Entry Rate: Effective pay range based on experience:
- $18.40/hour (with experience up to $23.92/hour)
