Payroll Assistant

Location: Romford, Essex Salary: £28,000 - £32,000 per annum (dependent on experience) Job Type: Permanent, Full Time

About the Opportunity

An established and expanding organisation is seeking an experienced Payroll Assistant to join its Accounts team. This is a strong opportunity for someone with end-to-end payroll experience who thrives in a busy, supportive environment, where accuracy and attention to detail are paramount.

This role entails taking ownership of the monthly payroll process for around 400 employees across multiple locations, ensuring timely, compliant and error-free payroll operations.

Responsibilities

  • Process end-to-end payroll for approximately 400 employees across five locations each month.
  • Administer new starter documentation, including P45s, HMRC New Starter Checklists and bank details.
  • Ensure validated payroll data (salaries, overtime, bonuses, deductions) is accurately recorded before execution.
  • Liaise with internal teams regarding payroll adjustments, salary sacrifice schemes and expenses.
  • Handle pension administration, including reconciliations and data uploads.
  • Support company vehicle administration, covering P11D reporting, private mileage and Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs).
  • Maintain compliance with current payroll legislation and company policies.

Requirements

We are seeking a candidate with:

Essential:

  • Previous experience processing end-to-end payroll.
  • Proficiency in Sage 50 Payroll (essential).
  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to payers.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word and Outlook.
  • Outstanding communication skills and organisation ability.
  • Professional, proactive approach with a strong problem-solving mindset.

Desirable:

  • Certification in the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP).
  • Experience administering workplace pensions, ideally with Aviva systems.
