Job Title: Payroll Administrator & Finance Assistant

Location: Earls Colne, Colchester (CO6) – Office-Based

Job Type: Full-time or Part-time (Min 30 hrs per week), Permanent

Salary: Circa £28k pa depending on experience (Pro-rata for part-time)

David Watson Transport is a market-leading, FORS Gold accredited specialist transport business. We operate over 110 vehicles across 7 UK depots with a team of 170 employees. As one of the UK’s largest specialist transport companies, we pride ourselves on setting the standards for others to follow.

We are seeking an experienced Payroll Administrator & Finance Assistant to join our successful finance team based at our new head office in Earls Colne, reporting directly to the Finance Director.

The Role

This position splits focus between end-to-end payroll management and core accounting support.

Payroll Responsibilities:

  • End to end processing of 4-weekly driver payroll.
  • Summarise, check, and consolidate weekly timesheets.
  • Process joiners and leavers.
  • Calculate holiday pay, bonus payments, and statutory payments.
  • Prepare and upload payslips and produce payroll reports.
  • Prepare and submit BACS payments.
  • Assist with managing annual leave entitlement.
  • Manage all payroll compliance and auto-enrolment pension deductions.

Finance Assistant Responsibilities:

  • Process driver expense claims.
  • Code, post, and upload supplier invoices to the purchase ledger.
  • Perform statement reconciliations and process credit card transactions.
  • Post sales ledger receipts and resolve customer account payment queries.

Your Profile

  • Payroll Expertise: Significant experience running a sizeable end-to-end payroll is essential (PAYE, NIC, Statutory Payments).
  • Accounts Knowledge: Past experience with purchase ledger, sales ledger, and cash posting and allocation.
  • Software Skills: Microsoft Office with strong MS Excel skills (especially CSV imports/data manipulation). Knowledge of Sage 50 Payroll and Sage 200 Accounts is highly desirable, as is experience of using online banking applications.
  • Core Attributes: Exceptional attention to detail, tight time management, and absolute discretion with sensitive data.
  • Industry Insight: Experience within the transport or logistics sector is a bonus, but not essential.
