About MMK
MMK Chartered Certified Accountants is a growing and dynamic accountancy practice based at Capability Green, Luton. We provide accounting, tax, payroll, bookkeeping, and advisory services to a diverse range of businesses and individuals across the UK.
As our client portfolio continues to grow, we are seeking an experienced and highly capable Payroll Manager to take full ownership of our payroll function. This is a standalone position and an excellent opportunity for a confident payroll professional who is comfortable working independently and managing client payrolls from start to finish.
The Role
This is a key role within the practice, responsible for overseeing and delivering payroll services for a varied portfolio of clients. The successful candidate will have full responsibility for payroll processing, compliance, client communication, and statutory reporting.
We are looking for someone with strong technical payroll knowledge who can work with minimal supervision, manage multiple deadlines, and provide an exceptional level of service to our clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Process weekly, fortnightly, four-weekly, and monthly payrolls for a portfolio of clients.
- Manage all payroll-related employee lifecycle activities, including new starters, leavers, and employee amendments.
- Calculate and process statutory payments, including SSP, SMP, SPP, and other statutory entitlements.
- Administer workplace pension schemes and fulfil auto-enrolment obligations.
- Submit RTI reports, including FPS and EPS submissions, accurately and on time.
- Produce payroll documentation, including payslips, P45s, P60s, and year-end reports.
- Maintain accurate payroll records and ensure compliance with GDPR requirements.
- Handle payroll-related queries from clients in a professional and timely manner.
- Liaise directly with HMRC, pension providers, and other relevant organisations where required.
- Monitor legislative and regulatory changes affecting payroll and ensure continued compliance.
- Take ownership of payroll processes and continuously identify opportunities for improvement.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
