Payroll Officer
Location: Liverpool, hybrid (minimum 3 days on site per week)
Contract: Fixed term contract until July 2027
Salary: £33,951–£38,784 per annum
About This Role
At LSTM, the People Services team supports colleagues across a world-leading global health organisation. We are recruiting a Payroll Officer to cover a fixed-term maternity leave position from 1 September until July 2027.
This key role involves delivering an accurate, efficient, and responsive payroll service, ensuring compliance with government legislation, LSTM policies, and maintaining timelier employee payments. You will manage the full payroll lifecycle, including:
- Providing expert payroll advice
- Processing monthly payrolls
- Administering pension schemes
- Completing statutory reporting
- Supporting process improvements
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and process three UK monthly payrolls (document validation, expense/timesheet oversight, overtime input on iTrent) within SLA deadlines and compliance standards.
- Offer technical/complex payroll guidance to staff and managers.
- Ensure adherence to GDPR, HMRC, pension regulations, including HMRC deduction reconciliations via the employer portal.
- Complete month-end/year-end reconciliations and statutory reporting.
- Administer LSTM’s pension schemes (USS, NHS, ULPF) and guide staff through the pension lifecycle.
- Issue payroll documentation (P45s, P60s) and employee communications.
- Calculate maternity/paternity/shared parental leave payments alongside LSTM policy.
- Maintain payroll records in iTrent, ensuring data quality/accuracy.
- Collaborate with colleagues in HR to deliver a seamless service and meet departmental goals.

We Are Looking For
The ideal candidate will have experience in payroll, with knowledge of:
- Statutory and legal requirements relevant to payroll.
- Pension schemes administration and reconciliation.
- Advanced Microsoft Office tools (particularly Excel proficiency).
- HR and payroll systems (preferably experience with iTrent).
- Clear communication skills to explain complex financial info effectively.
- Ability to work autonomously, meet deadlines, and manage pressure collaboratively.
- A customer-focused mindset with experience supporting diverse stakeholders.
Desirable but not essential qualifications/experience encompass:
- Knowledge of NHS payroll systems (NHS pensions policies).
- International payroll management experience.
- A recognised qualification (e.g., CIPP certification) or equivalent relevant experience.
