I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

ABOUT THE ROLE

  • Lead the design and rollout of a centralised payroll operating model, creating a single point of ownership with consistent, streamlined processes and standards.
  • Drive payroll transformation initiatives, including system upgrades, process automation, and transitions to new ways of working.
  • Design and oversee a robust payroll control framework covering reconciliations, approvals, exception handling, and issue resolution.
  • Act as payroll subject matter expert on major HR systems projects, ensuring payroll requirements are built into new platforms from the outset.
  • Ensure accurate, compliant payroll processing across all operating locations, keeping pace with local employment and tax requirements.
  • Establish SLAs, KPIs, and governance frameworks to manage payroll risk and maintain consistent service quality group-wide.
  • Manage ongoing service performance through structured reviews and escalation processes.
  • Provide strong leadership across the payroll function, building a culture of accountability, expertise, and continuous improvement.
  • Champion continuous improvement in payroll processes and systems, applying best-practice methodologies to drive efficiency.
  • Partner closely with HR, Finance, Legal, Internal Audit, and external auditors to keep payroll aligned with organisational and regulatory requirements.
