Statement of expectation for the role: 2-year fixed-term role
Vetting level required: RV/CTC
Location: Hybrid Working – Predominantly based at Central London Stables (Hampton Court Road, TW12 2EJ, previously Great Scotland Yard), subject to relocation.
Weekly requirements: Officers will attend training/outer stables at The Stockyard, Bushy Park, Hampton Court Road, TW12 2EJ. Parades will be required at Bushy Park until the inner London stables relocation is complete.
Salary: According to National Pay Scales plus allowances

Role Purpose
As a Mounted Police Constable, you will be responsible for:
- Providing a unique policing resource with enhanced public engagement, building trust through ceremonial events, incident responses, and public order maintenance
- Supporting police operations by deterring crime, improving public reassurance, and detecting offences through visible policing
- Contributing to the expansion of the City’s Mounted Branch Police Service Unit (PSU), assisting with the locating, purchasing, and training of new police horses
The branch is currently undergoing a period of expansion, training both officers and horses to achieve full operational capability.
Key Accountabilities
Police Horse Welfare & Training
- Maintain the highest standards of horse care, welfare, and turnout
- Assist in the training programmes for police horses
- Upon attaining the Intermediate Equitation Qualification, provide support to trainers for introducing police horses to operational duty
Public Engagement & Crime Prevention
- Conduct high-profile incident responses and crowd control patrols in high-crime and high-visibility areas
- Prevent and detect crime through targeted patrols within busy public areas
- Provide public reassurance during community events and high-profile incidents

Operational Responsibilities
- Gather and manage intelligence and information in line with legal and operational standards
- Manage conflicts while maintaining personal, public, and animal safety
- Support public order at high-profile ceremonial events, respond to risks, and safeguard the public and colleagues
Professional Development
- Develop and maintain national equitation skills, ensuring compliance with operational competency requirements
- Continuously enhance personal and team performance in mounted policing roles
Statement of Expectations
This is a full-time Permanent Constable (PC) position within the Mounted Branch.
Essential Criteria
Understanding all the outlined criteria is highly critical, and candidates will fail to be considered if unable to demonstrate competency:
- Hold a valid NPCC Standard Equitation Certificate (SEC)
- Proven knowledge of horse care, welfare, and stable management
- Experience riding in busy/public environments, including roads, public events, and crowds
- Successfully pass the Job-Related Fitness Test (JRFT) (current benchmark: 5.7 level bleep test)
- Willingness and ability to undertake Mounted Branch Public Order Training
- Preference given to candidates with Level 2 Public Order (PSU) training or equivalent policing experience
Successful candidates will be expected to complete HGV Category C training to maintain the City of London Police Mounted Branch’s operational capabilities (driving the horsebox).
Desirable Criteria
While not mandatory, these aspects strengthen your application:
- Intermediate Equitation Certificate
- National Mounted Police Instructor Qualification
- Category C HGV driving licence
- Level 2 Public Order (as previous experience)
Pre-Alcompetention Riding Suitability Assessment
All pre-interview applicants will be required to attend a one-day suitability assessment at The Stockyard, Bushy Park. This evaluation will determine immediate eligibility for posting.
Interview Process
The interview process will evaluate candidates against Level 1 of the College of Policing Competency and Values Framework, based on five key competencies:
- Ownership – Responsibility and accountability in your duties
- Emotional Awareness – Understanding behaviour and conflict management
- Collaboration – Working effectively as part of a team
