Postdoctoral Research Position - Alzheimer's Disease Research
An exciting opportunity exists to carry out a postdoctoral research position in the newly established GSK-Manchester NaVigate programme to establish treatment options for Alzheimer’s Disease. The position will be initially available for 3 years, with the possibility of extending up to 5 years. The research will be carried out in the Microvascular@Manchester group (microvascularmanchester.com) under the guidance of Professor Adam Greenstein and Dr Harry Pritchard. The post will be based within the Division of Cardiovascular Sciences at the University of Manchester and the Geoffrey Jefferson Brain Research Centre.
The research follows on from the recent work from the Microvascular@Manchester group into the pathways underlying the reduction in cerebral blood flow in Alzheimer’s Disease (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35727988/). The appointed person will work with cerebral arteries from mice, to discover the mechanism by which amyloid beta contracts vascular smooth muscle cells. The goal is to understand the underlying amyloid beta induced Ca2+ signals and identify therapeutic targets. By prevent these calcium signals we hope to improve arterial diameter control, thereby increasing cerebral blood flow and maintaining cognitive function. This research will utilise state-of-the-art in vivo imaging techniques and resources in the brain. As well as leading a project, the successful post-doctoral researcher will also be given fantastic opportunities to collaborate on other projects within the lab and/or within The Manchester British Heart Foundation Centre of Research Excellence.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
