Assistant Vice President – Global Pensions & European ME Benefits

Purpose of the Role

To develop, implement, deliver, and govern employee retirement plans and benefits programmes. Provide counsel to resolve related issues while ensuring compliance with regulatory and governance standards.

About the Role

Responsible for:

  • Design, implementation, and delivery of retirement plans, benefits programmes, and associated processes aligned with organisational strategy and supported by technology.
  • Resolution of escalated retirement and benefits issues (directly, via HR operational teams, or through third-party oversight).
  • Full compliance with internal governance standards and external regulations, including legislative updates.
  • Employee and manager communications to educate on available options (retirement, health insurance, other benefits).
  • Market research and strategic development of retirement and benefits administration and compliance.
  • Vendor and stakeholder engagement for administration, delivery of services, and employee/manager counselling.
  • Cost oversight and governance for retirement and benefits plans, including budget alignment, forecasting, and funding monitoring.
  • Pension project activity, including scheme design reviews, liability management, and support to UK projects and financial reporting.

Accountabilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Advise on decision-making, contribute to policy development, and ensure operational excellence.
  • Collaborate closely with functions and business divisions.
  • Lead a team in performing complex tasks requiring advanced professional knowledge to drive business-wide impact.
  • Set objectives, coach employees, conduct appraisals, and determine reward outcomes.
  • Demonstrate core leadership behaviours: L (Listen and be Authentic), E (Energise and Inspire), A (Align across the Enterprise), D (Develop Others).
  • Lead on global pension strategy in Barclays, with specific focus on European and ME pension plans.
  • Provide technical support to projects, scheme reviews, and financial reporting.
  • Mitigate risks and develop new policies/procedures to improve governance.

Requirements

Essential:

  • Technical knowledge of UK pension design and governance models.
  • Experience in project ownership in fast-paced environments, proactive and collaborative.

Preferred:

  • Broad understanding of non-UK pension designs (with European focus).
  • Relevant professional qualifications (e.g., APMI or equivalents).
