Pensions Governance Assistant Vice President
Pension Strategy & Governance Lead (EMEA)
About the Role
Hackajob is collaborating with Barclays to connect them with exceptional professionals for this Assistant Vice President position in Pension Strategy & Governance, focusing on EMEA (Europe and Middle East) with UK pension knowledge as a minimum qualification.
About 100% fully remote (based from London or Glasgow office).
Purpose of the Role
The role focuses on developing, implementing, and delivering retirement plans, employee benefits programmes, and governance, ensuring alignment with the organisation’s strategy and regulatory requirements. This includes:
- Advising and influencing decision-making on retirement strategy
- Auditing and managing UK, Europe, and Middle East pension plans, including design reviews and liability management
- Owning project delivery in fast-paced environments, driving collaborative governance and compliance
- Acting as a technical and strategic advisor for UK pension projects, financial reporting, and escalations
Key Accountabilities
- Pension & Benefits Governance:
- Own design, delivery, and compliance of retirement plans—ensuring alignment with internal/regulatory standards
- Remain current with legislative and regulatory changes and proactively adapt strategies

Communication & Strategy:
- Educate employees/managers on benefits via engaging campaigns (e.g., retirement savings health insurance)
- Conduct market research to develop cost-effective, compliant benefits programmes

Stakeholder & Vendor Management:
- Manage external vendors/stakeholders for plan administration and operational delivery
- Advise HR teams without resolving issues up front

Financial & Risk Oversight:
- Forecast/manage expenses, monitor funding, and optimise cost control & budget adherence

Leadership & Strategy:
- Influence decision-making, collaborate with business units, and develop policies and strategic guidance
- Align and lead cross-functional global project teams in delivering complex assignments
- Provide consultative advice on escalated issues while identifying cost-effective solutions

Operations & Risk Mitigation:
- Conduct deep data/analytical reviews from internal/external sources to solve complex problems
- Identify and reduce risks by developing new procedures, maintaining governance standards, and overseeing control frameworks

- Collaboration & Communication:
- Engage stakeholders, presenting complex/sensitive data whilst acting with integrity
- Foster psychological safety and build Trust, Alignment, Empathy, and Development (the LEAD behavioural model) if leading teams
critical technical skills
- Minimum UK pension design/governance knowledge, with strong preference for experience outside the UK (ideally EMEA)
- Excellent Excel and data analytical expertise
- Working towards or holding qualifications in pensions (e.g., APMI/equivalent)
