The People Advisor
The People Advisor plays a key role in delivering a proactive, practical and people-centred service across the business. Acting as a trusted first point of contact for managers and employees, the role provides advice and guidance on all employee relations matters.
The role is responsible for ensuring a consistent and positive employee experience by supporting managers through the employee lifecycle, driving adherence to key people processes, and identifying opportunities to improve the effectiveness, compliance and efficiency of people practices.
The People Advisor will combine strong employee relations knowledge with a passion for employee experience, helping to build a culture where people can perform at their best and feel supported, valued and engaged.
Employee Relations
- Provide first-line employee relations advice and guidance to managers and employees.
- Support the management of absence, disciplinary, grievance, capability, performance and conduct matters.
- Prepare documentation, attend meetings and maintain accurate records for employee relations cases, promoting fair, consistent and legally compliant decision-making across the business.
- Monitor short and long-term absence cases and support managers in applying company procedures, coordinate occupational health referrals and act as the main liaison with occupational health providers.
- Support managers in implementing workplace adjustments and occupational health recommendations.
- Analyse absence trends and identify opportunities to improve employee wellbeing and attendance and produce regular absence reporting and management information.
Probation Management
- Take ownership of the probation review process across the business, monitoring probation milestones and ensure reviews are completed within required timescales.
- Support managers in making informed decisions on probation confirmations, extensions and terminations.
- Identify trends and opportunities to improve onboarding effectiveness and early retention.

Family Leave & Flexible Working
- Act as the primary People team contact for family-friendly policies and procedures.
- Support employees and managers through maternity, paternity, adoption, shared parental leave and parental leave processes.
- Ensure all family leave arrangements are administered accurately and in line with legislation and company policy.
- Manage flexible working requests from submission through to decision, ensuring consistency and fairness, providing guidance to managers on flexible working arrangements and associated business considerations.
Engagement & Communications
- Support recognition programmes, cultural initiatives and employee events.
- Support the delivery of employee engagement activities, surveys and action plans.
- Support the creation and delivery of internal people communications.
- Draft engaging communications relating to people initiatives, wellbeing and charitable events.
Policy, Compliance & Governance
- Maintain and review People policies, procedures and guidance documents.
- Ensure policies are applied consistently and in line with employment legislation and company values.
- Support policy updates and communicate changes to managers and employees.
Process Improvement & Digital Enablement
- Continuously improve People processes, policies and ways of working to enhance efficiency and employee experience.
- Utilise automation, digital tools and AI solutions to reduce manual administration and streamline People activities.
- Use data, insights and employee feedback to identify opportunities for improvement and support informed decision-making.
Essential
- CIPD qualified (Level 3 or Level 5) or working towards qualification.
- Experience providing employee relations advice and guidance.
- Good understanding of UK employment law and HR best practice.
- Experience managing absence and occupational health processes.
- Understanding of family leave and flexible working legislation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent organisational and administrative skills.
- Ability to build trusted relationships with employees and managers.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to confidentiality.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
