At Octopus Energy Trading

At Octopus Energy Trading, we’re on a mission to reshape the future of energy. As part of Octopus Energy Group, we’re creating an innovative approach to trading that will accelerate the transition to a Net Zero world. With the growth of renewables and a push toward decarbonising heating and transport, greater flexibility in the grid is essential. We are building cutting-edge technology to optimise everything from domestic EV charging to grid-scale batteries, to meet the global demand for energy flexibility.

We’re looking for passionate and unconventional thinkers to join us on this journey, bringing a diversity of experience and ideas to shape a more efficient, flexible, and sustainable energy system.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and analytical professional to join our asset optimisation team. This role is ideal for a storyteller who loves diving into data, and who wants to help decarbonise the energy system.

The Performance Analyst will work closely with the commercial and technical optimisation teams. This is an opportunity to play a key role in understanding and improving the performance of our trading strategies for flexibility optimisations, everything from large grid-scale BESS down to residential assets. You’ll help build reporting, monitoring tools, and performance metrics that allow us to identify what’s working, what isn’t, and where we should focus next. The insights generated by this work will directly feed into our development priorities. We’re looking for someone analytical, inquisitive, and proactive, with a solid technical foundation and experience working with data in Python.

What you’ll do

  • You’ll be the key source of truth in understanding how well our flexible assets are performing. You’ll quantify, understand and communicate what we’re doing well and what we’re not, and will heavily influence our strategy to ensure our development is having the greatest impact.
  • Build and maintain reporting and monitoring tools to assess the performance of our optimisations - covering both automated algo strategies and human trader decision making.
  • Conduct in-depth analysis of our strategies to identify trends, strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement.
  • Translate complex analysis into clear, compelling insights and recommended actions for a range of stakeholders (inc. traders, developers, battery ops), adapting communication style to the audience.
  • Help improve the quality, accuracy, and accessibility of performance data.
  • Proactively identify gaps, opportunities, and areas for improvement in how we measure and monitor performance.
  • Assist in researching and analysing emerging market trends, competitor activity, and new opportunities to support strategic planning and commercial decision-making.
  • Help foster a strong one-team environment by building great relationships across our commercial team, data scientists, and traders.
  • Take on new challenges and opportunities as the role and business continue to evolve.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
