About the Role
At Octopus Energy Trading, we’re pioneering a new era in energy trading to accelerate the transition to a Net Zero future. As the Performance Analyst in our asset optimisation team, you’ll work closely with commercial and technical optimisation teams, ensuring our trading strategies for flexibility optimisations are performing at their best—whether for large grid-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) or residential assets.
You’ll develop reporting and monitoring tools, performance metrics, and(key performance insights** that inform our development priorities. The role demands someone analytical, inquisitive, and proactive, with a strong technical foundation, particularly in Python.

What You’ll Do
Key Responsibilities
- Become the definitive source of truth on flexible asset performance, identifying successes and gaps to optimise strategies.
- Build scalable reporting and monitoring tools to track performance, covering:
- automated algorithmic trading strategies
- human trader decision-making
- Conduct in-depth, data-driven analyses to uncover:
- trends
- strengths and weaknesses
- areas for improvement
- Translate complex technical insights into clear, actionable recommendations for traders, developers, operations teams, adapting communication to each audience.
- Enhance data quality, accuracy, and accessibility to ensure insights are actionable.
- Proactively identify performance gaps and opportunities, suggesting improvements in our measuring and monitoring frameworks.
- Spot emerging market trends, competitor movements, and new opportunities to support strategic planning and commercial decisions.
- Help foster team cohesion by strengthening relationships across the commercial team, data scientists, and traders.
- Embrace new challenges and grow as your role evolves within the fast-paced energy trading sector.
What You’ll Need
Essential Skills & Experience
- Strong analytical mindset with experience working confidently with large, complex datasets in high-demand environments.
- Comfortable with quantitative/statistical work—demonstrated Python programming skills for data analysis.
- Familiarity with:
- Git
- CI/CD pipelines
- SQL
- Ability to simplify complex findings for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Inquisitive and proactive, with a willingness to challenge existing processes and drive automation.
- Fast-paced adaptability—managing multiple tasks and problem-solving under pressure.
- Attention to detail coupled with a structured, orderly approach to work.
- A collaborative and enthusiastic attitude, enjoying cross-functional teamwork.
- Passionate about decarbonisation and energy transition, with a strong values alignment with Octopus’ mission.
