Performing Arts Technician

Performing Arts Technician | Permanent Role – 20 Hours Per Week, £13,720


Start Date & Contract

  • Start Date: 1 September 2026
  • Contract: Permanent
  • Working Hours: 20 hours per week (term time only, part-time pro rata pay balanced from full-time equivalent salary of £30,291)

About the Role

Sutton High School is inviting applications for a dynamic, multi-skilled Performing Arts Technician with an exciting passion for theatre, music, and performing arts to join our thriving school community.

In this highly technical and hands-on position, you will provide professional-level support for all school performances and events. Your responsibilities will ensure that every production—theatre, music, dance, and special events—reaches an outstanding standard through expert technical execution.

You will be responsible for:

  • Managing technical resources for productions, including:
    • Programming and operating lighting and sound systems
    • Rigging and stage setup/demount (get-ins/get-outs)
    • Operating AV equipment, sound mixers, and lighting consoles
    • Staging and seating arrangements tailored for each event
  • Admin support for the Drama and Music Departments:
    • Managing event bookings, scheduling, and logistics
    • Assisting with departmental coordination and technical documentation
  • Backstage and workspace maintenance:
    • Overseeing the stage, storage spaces, dressing rooms, lighting/sound rigs to ensure they are clean, safe, and fully operational
    • Ensuring technical equipment is ready and professionally prepared for every performance

Essential Requirements

  • Technical qualifications or training in theatrical technical production, ideally within areas such as lighting, sound engineering, rigging, or AV.
  • Proficiency in operating:
    • Sound mixing consoles (e.g., QSC, Yamaha, Soundcraft)
    • Lighting consoles (e.g., Chandelier, EOS, GrandMA)
    • Stage rigging and movement systems
  • Thorough knowledge of theatre practices, equipment, and health & safety regulations for performing arts environments.
  • Experience supporting live events, performances, and adaptations for school settings (preferred) or professional commercial theatres.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends, adapting to the needs of performances and school events outside of standard hours.
  • Reliability, organisation, and attention to detail—this role requires punctual and high-quality execution.
  • A passion for creativity combined with technical precision—balancing artistic vision with hands-on realism is key.
