Perinatal Mental Health & Birth Reflections Midwife
Key Role in Developing and Maintaining High Standards of Care
This is a key role in developing and maintaining high standards of care for women and their families with Perinatal Mental Health (PMH) challenges in pregnancy and the postnatal period. The post holder will have a high level of relevant expert knowledge and skills, which will be used to manage, develop, and lead care for pregnant and new mothers with mental health needs.
Responsibilities
- Provide extra support and care to some pregnant women with more severe mental health problems in partnership with other external agencies.
- Work closely with women and their families to plan and coordinate their care based on their individual needs.
- Provide a link between the maternity service and other services involved in mental health care.
- Ensure that relevant pathways, policies, and processes for women with, or at risk of, mental illness are developed, implemented, and audited.
- Work with a range of relevant professionals, services, and agencies.
Specialist Clinical Care
- Provide specialist clinical care alongside Community Midwives, supporting women at risk of perinatal mental illness through assessment, individualized care planning, and referral to appropriate services.
- Act as an advocate to ensure women receive timely access to specialist mental health care where required.
- Communicate effectively with women and their families, respecting individual needs, culture, and preferred communication methods, while providing sensitive information about perinatal mental health.
- Support the implementation of relevant statutory and professional guidelines relating to mental illness.

Specialist Support
- Provide specialist support for women experiencing substance misuse and co-occurring perinatal mental health difficulties during pregnancy and the postnatal period.
- Assess mental health, substance use, risk, and safeguarding needs, contributing to integrated, person-centred care plans.
- Work collaboratively with maternity, safeguarding, social care, substance misuse, and multidisciplinary teams to promote engagement with treatment, recovery, harm reduction, and improved outcomes for women, babies, and families.
Birth Reflections Service
- Lead the Birth Reflections service, offering women and families a safe, supportive environment to explore their birth experience, identify unmet emotional needs, facilitate referrals where appropriate, and use service user feedback to support quality improvement and enhance maternity care.
