Personal Tutor – Adult Learners

Job Description

Job Title: Personal Tutor – Adult Learners Salary: £21,259 – £23,040 (FTE: £23,484 – £25,452) per year Job Type: Full-time, permanent, 35 hours/week, Term-time only (40 weeks)

We are seeking a dedicated Personal Tutor to join our Student Progress department. The role focuses on ensuring adult students achieve their academic targets and personal goals, guiding progression to higher education, employment, or apprenticeships. As an advocate for students, you will:

  • Bridge skills gaps
  • Provide pastoral and motivational support
  • Collaborate with curriculum teams and external agencies

You will report directly to the Inclusion Manager.


Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the College’s mission and values by supporting effective implementation across all areas.
  • Assist in student induction, ensuring learners receive essential course information and access to support.
  • Work with curriculum teams to:
    • Ensure students are enrolled on the correct study programmes.
    • Facilitate learner group sessions to develop progression skills.
    • Implement progress reviews and manage transitions to new programmes.
  • Create and maintain electronic individual learning plans (ILPs) for assigned students.
  • Conduct 1:1 Progress Reviews to track progress against targets, attendance, and Minimum Target Grades (MTGs).
  • Identify and monitor "at risk" learners, ensuring appropriate curriculum interventions.
  • Gather student feedback and champion student voice for continuous improvement.
  • Foster partnerships with ext support agencies and Next of Kin (NOK) to enhance wellbeing, engagement, and achievement.
  • Share best practices and resources with curriculum teams to improve student experience.
  • Establish a positive, inclusive learning environment by:
    • Promoting safeguarding for children and vulnerable adults.
    • Encouraging respectful behaviour and anti-discrimination in all interactions.
  • Collaborate with the Work Experience Team to support students’ career goals.
  • Assist in destination data capture (post-study outcomes).
  • Help students and staff complete UCAS applications and write references.
  • Support English, Maths, and study skills development for students.
  • Review professional development needs and engage in continuing training.
  • Contribute to funded projects enhancing student progression and experience.
  • Record learner progression and destination data.

Essential Skills, Knowledge & Qualifications

  • Qualifications:

    • Educated to Level 3+
    • Minimum Level 2 Literacy and Numeracy, or commitment to improvement
  • Key competencies:

    • Excellent computer literacy (proficient in College IT systems)
    • Strong understanding of pastoral support (replaced "tutorial provision")
    • High-level communication and interpersonal skills
    • Ability to set and maintain high standards for students and peers
  • Desirable Qualifications & Experience:

    • Recognised teaching qualification or similar vocational experience
    • Professional qualification relevant to tutoring or curriculum areas
    • Engagement in Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
    • Experience in resource-based learning or Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL)
    • An ICT qualification or proficiency in multi-lingual support (e.g., Arabic, Chinese, French, Portuguese, Spanish, etc.)
    • Membership of a relevant professional body
