Our Service Technicians/Mechanics are involved in all aspects of maintenance and repair, from routine servicing to complex diagnostics and repairs to our customers' vehicles.

About the Role

The Service department is vital to the success of our business. From right first-time fixes, to delivering excellent customer service, our Service Technicians/Mechanics play a pivotal role in delighting our customers and encouraging their continued loyalty.

Every day is different within the Service department. As a Service Technician/Mechanic apprentice, some of your duties will include:

  • Use of diagnostic equipment to identify vehicle faults
  • Testing of parts and systems to ensure correct working
  • Following checklists to ensure all critical parts of vehicles are examined
  • Carrying out bumper to bumper overview, service, and inspection
  • Maintenance of electronic systems including on-board entertainment systems
  • Undertaking repair and maintenance of vehicle parts including clutches, gearboxes, tyres, brakes, and suspension
  • Completion of legible and accurate paperwork for the customers' and centres' records
  • Maintenance of a clean and tidy work environment

You will have the opportunity to work with a wide range of products, including traditional, hybrid, and electronic engines. From heritage vehicles to leading edge modern technology, our range will provide you with a varied technical training experience to build your skills as a Service Technician/Mechanic.

Requirements

Our ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate skills in logic and problem solving. You should be someone who pays attention to detail and is committed to completing this three year training programme.

We are looking for people who are passionate about our industry and our brand. The ideal candidate will already have had some experience in the industry, i.e. work experience or spent time observing others working on vehicle engines.

Apprenticeship Details

Apprenticeships include time away from working for specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills.

Motor vehicle service and maintenance technician - light vehicle (level 3)

Course Contents

  • Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop.
  • Segregate waste for disposal or recycling.
  • Comply with industry environmental legislation.
  • Demonstrate due regard for own safety and that of others in the workshop and minimize risk of injury and vehicle damage.
  • Carry out fundamental tasks associated with removal and replacement procedures on a vehicle.
  • Obtain diagnostic and repair information.
  • Interpret diagnostic information and use electrical wiring diagrams to determine system serviceability.
  • Use a range of diagnostic equipment.
  • Follow recognised diagnostic procedures, logical diagnostic sequence and apply advanced diagnostic principles and problem-solving techniques to establish faults.
  • Report faults using company procedures and recommend suitable further actions.
  • Follow recognised repair procedures to complete a wide range of repairs including those which involve complex procedures, or in depth knowledge.
  • Test the function of repaired and fitted components.
  • Adhere to business processes and complete documentation following workplace procedures.
  • Use ICT to create emails, word-process documents and carry out web based searches.
  • Complete a range of services and inspect and prepare a vehicle to the required quality standard for handover to the customer.

Training Delivery

Training will be delivered using a combination of virtual classroom remote learning and face-to-face block release weeks at our state-of-the-art training centre. Successful applicants must be prepared to travel to the Volkswagen Group National Learning Centre, in Milton Keynes, to complete their apprenticeship training. All training-related costs are fully covered as part of the programme, including travel, accommodation, and meals.

In the workplace, your personal, dedicated mentor will support your continued learning as you apply the skills and knowledge you have gained through the remote sessions and at the Volkswagen Group National Learning Centre. As an apprentice, you will also have the opportunity to attend Outward Bound, a personal development week which supports with developing resilience, confidence, and teamwork skills.

This is a fully rounded training experience where you will build life skills that last and gain both apprenticeship qualifications and brand certifications.

Certifications

On successful completion of the three year programme, you will receive the following:

  • Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard in Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician (Light Vehicle)
  • Certificate in Automotive Refrigerant Handling
  • Brand specific certifications

GCSE Requirements

  • English (grade 9-4)
  • Maths (grade 9-4)
  • Science (grade 9-4)
