Job Opportunity: Pharmacy Level 2 Apprenticeship
A great opportunity to work in the pharmacy industry and deliver great customer service. While working in the pharmacy and gaining valuable experience, you will also be supported by Walsall College to achieve your Pharmacy Level 2 Apprenticeship standard.
Wage
- £15,392 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age
- National Minimum Wage rate for apprentices

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What You'll Do at Work
This role is based at their Central Hub location, some of your duties as a pharmacy services assistant may include:
- Processing prescription requests from other Northwood branches
- Dispensing prescriptions
- Using dispensary and stores computer systems to generate stock lists and labels
- Helping to maintain reasonable dispensary stock levels
- Ordering items for use within a department
- Receiving, loading, unloading incoming goods from wholesalers, manufacturers and elsewhere
- Answering queries on the supply and availability of medicines
- Responding to telephone and face-to-face enquiries of a routine nature from patients, their representatives, members of the public and a wide range of staff groups, and referring queries to the relevant member of the pharmacy team when necessary
- Drawing any problems identified or queries raised to the attention of pharmacists or pharmacy technicians
- Pre-packing, assembling and labelling medicines
- Ensuring that health and safety requirements are met

What You'll Learn
Course Contents
- Receive and log prescriptions
- Assemble prescribed items, undertake an in-process accuracy check and issue prescribed items
- Work according to legislative requirements, and organisational policies
- Order, receive, maintain and issue pharmaceutical stock
- Provide appropriate advice when authorised on supplied medicines and products, their storage and disposal
- Work within the parameters of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) of the pharmacy
- Act in accordance with systems and organisational governance
- Recognise and act within the pharmacy regulatory, legal and ethical standards
- Support the team in the development of others
- Maintain and further develop your own skills and knowledge through development activities; maintain evidence of your personal development and actively prepare for and participate in appraisal
- Communicate effectively with the public, carers and other health and social care professionals using a range of techniques to determine their needs, and keep information confidential
- Handle information (record, report and store information) related to individuals and/or patients in line with local and national policies
- Use pharmacy IT systems and other IT resources according to legislative requirements and organisational policies
- Demonstrate person centred care and support within a pharmacy setting
- Make pharmacy patients and patient safety your first concern
- Use judgement and refer service user as appropriate to another member of the team, GP, healthcare worker, manufacturer etc
- Maintain the interests of patients and the health of the public
- Promote and advocate equality, diversity and inclusion
- Promote healthy lifestyles to customers
- Work safely within the parameters of your role using Standard Operating Procedures
- Apply policies which relate to health and safety at work
- Act appropriately in situations to prevent harm to yourself and others
Training Schedule
- Level 2 Pharmacy Services Assistant qualification
- Weekly release at our Walsall Campus - 1 day per week (term time only)
- Full-time apprentices will typically spend 15 months on the programme (before the gateway) working towards the occupational standard, with off-the-job training
- Functional Skills in English and maths if required

The purpose of the end point assessment (EPA) is to test that an apprentice is fully capable of doing their job before they receive their apprenticeship certificate. It also helps to demonstrate that what an apprentice has learnt, can be applied in the real world. The focus is now on the outcome of an apprenticeship, and apprentices have to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and behaviours that employers have identified they need.

Other Requirements
As this is based at their central hub, this is not a position based in a community pharmacy, so the role will not be patient-facing. Attention to detail and good English skills are essential due to the volume of medication you will be processing. This role can be repetitive and would suit someone who enjoys a routine of daily tasks.
