About the Role
Seeking a progressive and rewarding start in Pharmacy? Join our Dynamic Patient Services team as a Band 2 Pharmacy Assistant in our forward-thinking, open culture at Bristol NHS Foundation Trust.
This progressive post offers:
- Hands-on experience in dispensary and clinical services
- Structured training leading to Band 3 progression (training provided)

All necessary training will be provided, including numeracy and literacy assessments (minimum 90% pass required).
Main Responsibilities
Dispensary & Reception Support
As a key member of the Patient Services team, you will:
- Handle receipt of prescriptions and drug requests from patients, staff, and hospital wards, ensuring accurate processing
- Assess patients for over-the-counter medication sales, including NHS prescription charge administration
- Perform dispensing and controlled drug handling in compliance with Good Dispensing Practice (GDP)
- Manage pharmacy stock control systems, labelling, and recommissioning medicines
- Handle public and department enquiries with clarity and accuracy
- Complete prescription dispensing, compliant with EU Good Distribution Practice (GDP)

Ward-Based Services
Support seamless medicines provision across hospital wards by:
- Collaborating with Clinical Pharmacists, Ward Technicians, and Patient Services Leads
- Facilitating ward discharges and maintaining medication storage safety
- Ensuring accurate medication handover during patient transitions between wards
- Processing ward supply requests as directed by pharmacists/technicians
- Minimising medication waste and compliance with proper storage procedures
- Assisting with ward stock reviews to improve efficiency and reduce missed doses
Distribution & Stock Management
Ensure uninterrupted stock availability through:
- Regular ward stock checks and verification against usage records
- Processing emergency medication requests in a timely manner
- Issuing and distributing pharmaceutical products following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Maintaining and documenting proper stock storage (rotation, conditions)
- Receiving inventory updates and ensuring compliance with shipping protocols
What We Need
Education & Qualifications (Essential)
- Good numeracy and literacy skills (assessed via interview)
Desirable
- Level 2 Buttercups Pharmacy Support Worker (Dispensary Units) or equivalent
- Previous experience in hospital or community pharmacy
Work Experience (Desirable)
- Experience in hospitals, clinics or pharmacy settings
Key Skills & Personal Qualities (Essential)
- Basic IT literacy (including data entry, system navigation)
- Excellent written and spoken communication in English
- Time management and ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Strong ability to work flexibly under pressure and follow instructions
- Proactive, self-motivated approach to learning
