Pharmacy Support Worker – RAH Pharmacy Team
About the Organisation

The Role
A dynamic opportunity exists for a self-motivated, enthusiastic individual to join the friendly RAH Pharmacy Team, ensuring the safe and effective supply of medicines to patients as an integral member of the team.
Key Responsibilities

Dispensing & Labeling Medicines
- Label and dispense inpatient and outpatient medicines clinically screened by a pharmacist.
- Dispense controlled drugs prescriptions, maintain accurate medicine balances.
- Label emergency medical retrieval bags for the Scottish Ambulance Service.

apharmacy Systems & Stock Management
- Input ward requisitions via the pharmacy stock control system.
- Conduct stock checks, stock rotation, and expiry date reviews.
- Assist with ward medicine top-up services and coordinate with nursing teams for good housekeeping.
- Advise on stock levels and optimise usage to minimise waste.

Specialist Prescription Handling
- Dispense complex prescriptions (e.g., palliative care, patient compliance aids).
- Handle unlicensed/licensed medicines, clinical trials, controlled drugs, antibiotic alert policies, and non-formulary products.
- Resolve medication discrepancies by liaising with senior pharmacy technicians/pharmacists.

Regulatory Compliance & Safety
- Ensure adherence to current legislation, ethics, NHS GGC policies, and GPhC requirements.
- Supervise the pharmacy robotic system (after training) and troubleshoot errors.
- Maintain good hygiene and PPE compliance.
- Act as temporary key holder for drug cupboards during top-up services.

Customer & Ward Support
- Handle telephone enquiries, resolving issues or directing to appropriate staff.
- Support nurses with medicine-related queries.
Requirements
Essential Qualifications & Skills
- **Minimum at National 5/Standard Grade level (or equivalent):
- English & Maths
- Basic numeracy & literacy (evidenced by 3 Standard Grade qualifications)
- Strong general education to follow procedures and participate in training
- Basic IT proficiency (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, stock control systems)
- Training willingness: Willingness to complete 18-month comprehensive on-the-job training for SVQ in Pharmacy Services (SCQF Level 6)
- Workplace skills:
- Self-motivation, initiative, prioritisation
- Clear communication (written & spoken)
- Property planning/organisation
- Teamwork & supervision potential (if applicable)
Desirable Experience
- Previous experience in healthcare, pharmacy, or customer-facing roles
- Familiarity with policy & procedures around medication dispensing
- Proficiency with stock management systems & Microsoft Office
- Understanding of health & safety, handling regulations, and waste management

Location, Contract & Contact
📍 Location: Royal Alexandra Hospital 📅 Duration: Permanent ⏰ Hours: Full-time (36h/week) ⬇ Shift Pattern:
- 0900-1700, Monday to Friday
- One 30-minute adjusted shift (early night or late start per week, as agreed)
