🫁 Two self-funded PhD opportunities in fungal lung disease at The University of Manchester

We are inviting expressions of interest from motivated candidates wishing to undertake a PhD investigating the role of Aspergillus in chronic respiratory disease.

Two complementary projects are available:

🔬 1. Personalised approaches to antifungal treatment in chronic fungal lung disease
This project will investigate how we can better individualise antifungal treatment for patients with chronic pulmonary aspergillosis, allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis and other Aspergillus-associated lung disease.
The student will combine:

  • large-scale real-world healthcare data analysis
  • advanced statistical and causal-inference methods
  • prospective clinical research
  • evaluation of biomarkers, including fungal serology, eosinophils, FeNO and volatile organic compounds
The aim is to identify which patients are most likely to benefit from antifungal treatment and support the development of more personalised management strategies.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

🧫 2. Unravelling the role of Aspergillus in chronic airway disease exacerbations and disease progression
This project will explore the clinical significance of Aspergillus in COPD and bronchiectasis, including whether it is a bystander, a marker of disease severity or a direct contributor to exacerbations and lung disease progression.
The research will include:

  • retrospective analysis of clinical cohorts
  • identification of risk factors for chronic or invasive aspergillosis
  • prospective recruitment during exacerbations and stable disease
  • fungal biomarker testing and immunophenotyping
  • multivariable and survival analysis

Both projects offer the opportunity to work at the interface of respiratory medicine, infectious diseases, medical mycology, data science and precision medicine within a multidisciplinary clinical and academic team in Manchester.
