PhD Studentship: AI-Driven Ultrasound for Materials Evaluation

University of Sussex | School of Engineering and Informatics | Fully Funded

The University of Sussex invites applications for a fully funded PhD studentship at the interface of ultrasonics, physics-based modelling, and artificial intelligence.

About the project

Ultrasound underpins safety-critical inspections in energy, transport, and advanced manufacturing, yet extracting quantitative information from ultrasonic measurements remains a long-standing challenge. This project will develop AI-driven ultrasonic methods for quantitative materials evaluation. The student will work across the full research pipeline: building high-fidelity ultrasound simulations, designing and benchmarking machine learning architectures, quantifying prediction uncertainty, and validating models against experiments. The project involves collaboration with a leading industry partner.

Supervision and environment

The student will be supervised by Dr Ming Huang and Dr Ivor Simpson, affiliated with Sussex AI and the Energy and Materials Engineering Research Centre, with access to state-of-the-art ultrasonic instrumentation and high-performance computing.

Funding

The studentship is open to UK and international candidates. It covers a tax-free stipend of £21,805 per year for 3.5 years, a full fee waiver (UK or international rate), and a one-off Research and Training Support Grant of £2,000.

Eligibility

Candidates will normally hold at least an upper second-class (2:1) undergraduate degree, or equivalent, in physics, engineering, applied mathematics, materials science, computer science, or a related field. Experience with ultrasound, numerical simulation, Python programming, or AI models is desirable but not essential.
