Phlebotomist – Job Vacancy at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust

About the Role

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is excited to invite applications for a compionate and motivated Phlebotomist to join our patient-focused team.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to safe, accurate, and high-quality blood collection services across inpatient and outpatient departments. You will work collaboratively with clinical teams, phlebotomists, nurses and laboratory staff to ensure efficient patient flow and superior diagnostic outcomes.

Reporting to the Phlebotomy Coordinators/Phlebotomy Manager, successful candidates will support reliable shift coverage (primarily 07:30–20:00) and play a crucial role in delivering respectful, timely, and patient-centred care across our busy hospital environment.


Key Responsibilities

As a compcompassionate Phlebotomist, your main duties include:

  • Providing high-quality venesection and cannulation services, ensuring safe and accurate blood sample collection in both inpatient and outpatient areas.
  • Working independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, collaborating with nurses, medical staff, and laboratory professionals.
  • Developing expertise in basic and advanced phlebotomy techniques, including venesection, cannulation, andaların preparation.
  • Completing mandatory training, including:
    • Venesection and cannulation protocols
    • ANTT (Anticoagulant/Cell Preparator Technology) courses
    • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Maintaining accurate and detailed patient records, prioritising efficiency and professionalism.
  • Supporting patient education, helping to ease any concerns about the blood collection process.
  • Adapting to high-pressure environments, particularly if challenges arise during collection (e.g., difficult veins, anxious patients).
  • Continuously improving practice through feedback and training to uphold high NHS service standards.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

✅ Ability to work efficiently in a team but also independently in a fast-paced hospital setting. ✅ Passion for patient care and willingness to learn and adapt to new procedures. ✅ Previous or simulated healthcare experience (training provided if none to start). ✅ Capability to manage work under pressure while maintaining attention to detail. ✅ Willingness to undertake and complete all essential training modules within two months:

  • Venesection and cannulation
  • ANTT training
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)

Desirable (but not essential) Experience

✨ Previous clinical/patient-facing role (hospital-based experience preferred). ✨ Experience in Venesection or laboratory work (not mandatory due to in-house training). ✨ Familiarity with hospital IT systems (e.g., EPR). ✨ NVQ Level 3 Healthcare qualification (preferred but not required).

  • Time management & prioritisation for efficient sample processing.
