Job Overview
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Phlebotomist.
This role is perfect if you are motivated, compassionate, and passionate about delivering safe, accurate, patient-focused blood collection services across both our inpatient and outpatient areas. Your contributions will directly support clinical teams, patient experience, and ensure high-quality diagnostic outcomes.
As part of our busy yet supportive phlebotomy service, you will:
- Work across a variety of day shifts (07:30–20:00) to provide reliable cover across the hospital.
- Become an integral member of our diverse, patient-facing team, collaborating closely with nursing, laboratory medicine, and other healthcare professionals.
- Work under the supervision of our Phlebotomy Coordinators/Manager to deliver safe, respectful, and timely care to every patient.

Detailed Job Description & Responsibilities
The primary role of a Phlebotomist at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is to provide:
- High-standard venesection and cannulation services for inpatients and outpatients requiring blood collection.
- Compassionate, individualised care under the directive of a qualified nurse or senior healthcare professional. -Support within a multidisciplinary team to ensure efficient patient flow and quality care.
Key Duties
- Collect blood samples safely and accurately, adhering to best practice standards.
- Work autonomously or as part of a team to manage workload while maintaining high Standards in patient care.
- Prioritise tasks efficiently, particularly during peak demand periods.
- Complete mandatory training (including Basic Life Support, Venesection, and Cannulation) within 2 months of employment.
- Develop and dilute skills in venous access techniques while working under supervision.
- Maintain accuate record-keeping and documentation for patient well-being tracking.
What We’re Looking For
Essential Criteria (Required)
✔ Professional and self-motivated – Able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. ✔ Experience in healthcare (held preference but recognised non-essential, as full in-house training provided). ✔ Ability to handle high-pressure situations – Willingness to provide calm, compassionate care even with patients experiencing difficulty during blood collection. ✔ Proficiency in a multi-disciplinary environment – Collaboration with nurses, lab staff, and medical teams. ✔ Ardent learning mindset – Completion of certified training within 2 months (including Venesection, Cannulation, and ANTT courses). ✔ Basic Life Support (BLS) training completed or prepared to undertake it.

Desirable Criteria (Preferred)
👉 Previous clinical experience in hospital or acute settings. 👉 Practical experience with Venesection or similar procedures. 👉 Familiarity with hospital IT systems for scheduling and documentation. 👉 NVQ Level 3 qualification (or willingness to pursue it).
