A Phlebotomist is responsible for the accurate collection and handling of patient laboratory specimens for diagnostic testing, adhering to established best practices while enhancing patient and caregiver engagement in an experienced manner.
About the Role
The Phlebotomist plays a critical role in accurately collecting and processing patient specimens required for diagnostic testing. This position operates within a professional medical environment, spanning both fast-paced hospitals and high/low-volume clinics, as part of a dynamic and engaging team.
Key responsibilities involve employing various techniques for specimen collection such as venipuncture, capillary puncture, PIVO (Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter), and throat swabs. Specimens may be collected from diverse patient groups, including outpatients, emergency department patients, inpatients (including newborns and those in intensive care), across all areas of the hospital.
Responsibilities
- Perform specimen collection via multiple techniques, including:
- Venipuncture
- Capillary puncture
- PIVO
- Throat swabs
- Ensure adherence to laboratory compliance and safety regulations
- Follow personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, including gowns, gloves, lab coats, face shields, and masks in both inpatient and outpatient settings
Additional Required Duties
- Communicate procedures and instructions with patients and family members with empathy
- Act as an advocate for safety and compliance within laboratory operations
- Participate in:
- Patient registrations
- Code response teams
- Specimen processing such as sending out, resulting, or referral testing
- Special projects, quality assurance, and waived testing adherence
- Clinical coaching/preceptorship and technical writing opportunities
- Downtime planning and continuous improvement projects

Contractual and Skill-Based Requirements
- Navigate multiple computer systems
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment
- Work under pressure in stressful situations
- Complete advanced collection and troubleshooting techniques such as bilateral nares and non-standard kits
** Schedule & Location**
- Location: St. Marys Regional Hospital
- Work City: Grand Junction
- Work State: Colorado
- Scheduled Weekly Hours: 24
- Hourly Rate Range:
$18.94 - $24.62(depending on experience)
Qualifications and Physical Demands
Education & Experience
- High school diploma (preferred)
- Either 12 months of phlebotomy experience, phlebotomy training, or national certification as approved by your manager/supervisor (preferred)
Physical Requirements
Ability to:
- See and read information, labels, and assesses patient conditions
- Regularly hear and communicate with patients, caregivers, and visitors
- Use manual dexterity for precise manipulation of equipment
- Lift and move patients, supply bags, or equipment (including heavy items)
- Navigate busy areas with varying floor surfaces
- Stand for extended periods
If driving is required:
- Drive a vehicle safely, ensuring visibility for road and traffic signs.
