About The Role
Join a small, fast-growing engineering team building one of the UK's largest online marketplaces in its field. Behind the scenes, our platform processes millions of customer interactions, large volumes of data, real-time events, payments, AI-powered background services, and high-throughput messaging systems. We are expanding our engineering team and are seeking an experienced Laravel developer who enjoys solving challenging technical problems, building reliable software at scale, and making a genuine impact. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work on complex systems, contribute to architectural improvements, and develop features that are used by millions of people across the UK.
Qualifications
Essential qualifications for this role include at least 2 years of commercial experience working with Laravel, complemented by a minimum of 5 years of experience with modern backend frameworks. Strong SQL knowledge is required, including expertise in database design and indexing. Candidates should have experience working with large datasets or high-volume applications and integrating third-party APIs such as Stripe, Google, AWS, or OpenAI. A good understanding of backend concepts like caching, queues, and asynchronous processing is essential. Excellent debugging and problem-solving skills are also critical for success in this role. The ideal candidate is passionate about technology, eager to learn, and able to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical colleagues.

Responsibilities
The responsibilities of this role are diverse and challenging. You will be involved in:
- Modernizing our Laravel platform
- Building scalable backend services and APIs
- Optimizing SQL queries across large datasets
- Designing efficient database structures and indexes
- Developing AI-powered background services and internal tooling
- Integrating with external services such as Stripe, AWS, Google, and OpenAI
- Improving caching mechanisms, queues, and asynchronous processing
- Enhancing system performance
- Developing internal applications that support various teams within the business
- Improving overall application reliability and scalability
- Contributing to our ongoing AWS migration efforts
- Seeing your work go live quickly, directly impacting our customers and internal teams
