Consultant - Design Engineer | PTS Physical Infrastructure Practice

Overview of the Role

As a Consultant – Design Engineer in the PTS Physical Infrastructure Practice, you will:

  • Work within a multi-skilled team to deliver structured cabling and telecoms design services to PTS’ clients
  • Transform client requirements from concept design into fully functional solutions, overseeing tendering and quality assurance for installations
  • Collaborate with internal PTS teams and external consultancies to optimise coordinated designs
  • Represent PTS professionally, demonstrating strong communication skills with clients, design bodies, and contractors

Key Responsibilities

Design & Documentation

  • Prepare and issue RIBA Stage 2, Stage 3, and Stage 4 documentation, including:
    • Plans
    • Elevations
    • Routing drawings
    • Schedules (strict adherence to PTS’ in-house formats)
  • Ensure compliance with relevant design standards and track/deadline actions arising from meetings

Cross-Disciplinary Coordination

  • Liaise with architectural, mechanical, electrical, security, AV, and other consultancies to produce cohesive designs
  • Conduct due diligence on equipment room placement and cable routing
  • Conduct equipment room electrical and heat loading assessments
  • Prepare cost estimations using PTS’ proprietary tools

Project Management & Compliance

  • Attend installation team meetings, respond to requests for information (RFIs), and approve technical submittals/drawings
  • Perform equipment room readiness inspections
  • Conduct CDM (Construction Design and Management) designers’ risk assessments
  • Ensure adherence to PTS’ ISO 9001 quality procedures
  • Maintain and improve technical proficiency through continuous upskilling

Client & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Provide weekly project status updates
  • Monitor scope changes and raise/track change requests align with project agreements
  • Represent PTS professionally with internal teams, clients, and contractors

Experience & Requirements

Essential Experience

  • Proven experience in structured cabling design (SCS) environments (including design, estimation, installation, and quality assurance)
  • Solid grasp of structured cabling complexities in construction settings
  • Familiarity with data centre SCS design and campus distribution systems is beneficial
