Company Description
Breakthrough technology is vital for strengthening the UK’s Defence and Homeland Security. As a Consultant Physicist at Awerian, you will be at the forefront of this innovation race and play your part by helping to defend and protect the UK from the latest technological and cyber threats.
Job Description
You will use your deep scientific insight and research skills to shine light on the hardest problems, exploring the art of the possible and inventing new solutions. You will design investigations to test and develop your ideas and see them become a reality through the creation of prototypes using Awerian’s rapid approach to design and implementation. This will involve all aspects of technology and product development – from invention, analysis, and computational modelling through to prototype design and the transfer to manufacturing.
You will see the concepts you enable have direct impact on the safety of the UK and its citizens. You will work with and lead expert teams of engineers and scientists delivering cutting-edge technology to our clients. It’s a fantastically challenging, varied, and agile role.
Qualifications
You will bring demonstrable technical experience in a range of the following areas:
- Quantum technologies, which could include sensing, position navigation and timing, computing, or communications.
- Optics, which could include propagation, imaging systems, fibre optics, high power and ultrafast lasers, spectroscopy, or evanescent coupling.
- Electromagnetics, which could include propagation, penetration, interference, plasma's, interaction with electronics, Radar systems, or sensing.
- Sonar and acoustics, which could include acoustic signal processing, characterising underwater environments, sensing, ultrasonics, or acoustic communications.
- Semiconductor physics, which could include junction behaviour, logic, thermal effects, or sensing.
- Thermal systems, which could include thermal management in aviation and maritime systems, complex thermal architectures, or materials processes.
- Fluid analysis, including particle dispersion, fluid flow and microfluidics.
- Algorithm design, which could include Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning, autonomous systems, signal processing and classification, or edge processing.

With the following skills and experience being desirable:
- Breadth of exposure to technical project management themes.
- Experience of communicating directly with clients and stakeholders, and acting as subject matter expert (SME) in client meetings.
- Experience of planning and proposing novel R&D activities. Using engagement, active listening, and influencing skills to navigate professional interactions.
- Experience of accountability for budgets and resource planning.
You will have a track record of academic excellence, hold a relevant postgraduate degree or equivalent professional experience, and have proven technical capabilities as a Physicist.
We are keen to hear from experienced Physicists with a background in any sector.
