Role Definition

The PI Underwriter will underwrite UK, European and International Professional Indemnity business aligning with the Optio governance framework, including internal rules, principles, strategy, as well as underwriting authorities and guidelines from key capacity partners.

Responsibilities & Accountability

  • Grow the book sustainably and profitably, focusing on achieving management-defined targets
  • Collaborate on strategies, identify opportunities, and perform all underwriting duties
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers and clients to position Optio as a preferred market for PI business
  • Ensure accurate and complete underwriting records while achieving contract certainty on all accounts at inception
  • Prioritise client needs in decision-making and ensure adherence to Optio’s internal standards and FCA guidelines
  • Promote a collaborative, equitable, inclusive, and respectful workplace culture that boosts employee engagement and contribution

Skill and Ability

  • Robust experience as an Underwriter or equivalent in the Professional Indemnity sector
  • Previous experience underwriting SMEs and mid-tier firms with proven success and profitability
  • Deep understanding of UK & international/professional indemnity insurance markets and competitor dynamics
  • Strong grasp of legal and regulatory frameworks
  • Established relationships with clients and brokers at peer group levels
  • Ability to drive long-term business success through planning, organisation, and development
  • Proficiency in leveraging data and analytics for operational efficiency and effectiveness
  • Capacity to design, develop, and implement consistent, robust contract wordings
  • Advanced proficiency in underwriting systems with high Microsoft Office competency
  • Fluent English communication skills
