High-Level Design & Simulation Specialist (Photonics, PIC)

Key Responsibilities

  • Support design and simulation activities of passive and active components within the Oriole PDK
  • Collaborate with the Oriole PIC team on mask layout and support tape-out cycles into a commercial foundry
  • Facilitate collaborative activities between Oriole and its supply chain partners
  • Support Test, Characterisation, and Design Verification of Oriole’s Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) program, delivering data analysis and verification reports

Essential Skills

  • PhD in Physics with a focus on Photonics, Semiconductors, or Optical Networks
  • Proficiency in photonic simulation (e.g., FDTD, EME) with hands-on experience using commercial Design of Experiments (DoE) software
  • Expertise in photonic layout and mask design with Synopsys, GDS Factory, Nazca, or Klayout
  • Strong Python programming skills, familiarity with version control systems
  • Experience in III-V semiconductor optical devices, including lasers, optical amplifiers, modulators, and detectors
  • Keep-ahead expertise in Silicon and Silicon-Nitride (Si/SiN) Photonics covering simulation, layout, and characterisation
  • Deep understanding of photonic process integration (PI) and its limitations, as well as design for manufacture (DFM) constraints
  • Application of Machine Learning (ML/AI), computational optimisation in photonic design simulations

Desired Skills

  • Photonic device characterisation including wafer-level and die-level testing methodologies
  • Modelling for high-speed RF design (additional value recognised)
  • RF/Thermal simulation experience
  • Analysis and understanding of photonic applications in AI data centres
  • In-depth expertise in Photonic device manufacturing, including design for manufacture (DFM), testability (DFT), and reliability (DFR/R)
  • Ability to assess PIC performance impact on system metrics (e.g., BER, link budget, power penalties), and system modelling interest
  • Outstanding communication, presentation skills, collaborative and teamwork focus
