Pipefitter
Pipe Fitter – Shipbuilding & Ship Repair
Navantia UK is a new force in British industry, supporting the UK’s defence, energy, and maritime ambitions. Job Description
Responsible for pipe fabrication, welding, and installation in:
- Units and blocks during new-build construction
- Ships under construction
- Replacement of defective pipe system elements in ship repair projects
Projects will cover a range of vessels across naval, marine, and repair sectors, requiring flexibility between new-build fabrication and construction, and ship repair tasks.
Main Duties

Safety and Compliance
- Maintain a safe working environment, strictly adhering to Navantia UK’s safety procedures

Technical Execution
- Read and interpret piping drawings, P&IDs, spool fabrication sheets, and engineering documents
- Profile and shape pipes/components using handheld power tools, mechanical cutting machines, and associated tooling
- Prepare and fit piping systems according to engineering drawings and specifications
- Install piping systems, including site fitting and alignment

Testing & Quality Assurance
- Test pipework and systems, diagnose faults, and assist with system commissioning

Welding & Inspection
- Understand weld procedures (WPSs) and perform welds as required
- Conduct defect checking on welds

Team Collaboration & Equipment
- Work within a team of pipe fitters and associated trades
- Operate and set up mechanical and welding equipment as necessary
Requirements
Essential Competencies
-
Safety Awareness
- Comprehensive knowledge of pipefitting workplace safety requirements and best working practices

Technical Experience
- Demonstrable experience in pipe fabrication, welding (where applicable), and fitting processes
- Preference for candidates who have completed a recognised apprenticeship (or equivalent) in relevant trade

Engineering & Drawing Skills
- Strong understanding of engineering drawings and technical documents

Quality & Standards
- Knowledge of Quality procedures and pipe fabrication/installation standards (e.g., NAVANTIA NV/QS 9000, BS/EN, American/European naval specs)

Welding Certification
- Valid, current Welding Qualification Certificate (ISO 9606-1)

Additional Information
- Rate: £18.55 per hour
- Contract: Full-time/permanent (249.75 hours annual leave, pro-rata for part-time)

Security Clearance
All candidates must successfully complete a Basic Protective Security Screening (BPSS) as part of the onboarding process.
