Pipe Systems Mechanic (Permanent Full-Time) – Naval & Shipbuilding Sector
Location
Belfast (New Build) Base: Harland & Wolff's historic Belfast yard
About the Role
You’ll play a critical role in the fabrication, welding, and installation of piping systems for naval vessels, marine plants, and larger marine units, including shiphouse new-build blocks and active repair projects. Duties span across new ship construction and defective pipework replacement in repair contracts, requiring adaptability between diverse sectors and mechanics.
Project scope extends to all Naval, Commercial Marine, and repair vessels under Navantia’s UK portfolio.
Key Responsibilities
Main Duties
- Maintain a safe working environment, adhering to Navantia/Harland & Wolff and UK Health & Safety (e.g. NSWG, WSHIS) regulations.
- Interprete technical specifications:
- Piping engineering drawings
- P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams)
- Spool fabrication sheets and bid/weld joint assembly instructions
- Prepare pipes using:
- Mechanical cutting machines and laser/IA tools
- Handheld power tools (plasma, torch, grinder)
- Press brakes for distortion correction
- Shape and profile pipes,heet metal, and fittings as required per International standards (BS/EN/ISO).
- Fit and assemble piping systems according to:
- Engineering specifications and drawings
- Quality and traceability protocols
- Navantia UK / Harland & Wolff Q/A procedures
- Install piping on-site (align and secureため装置) under Tolerances (BS 7078/ISO).
- Test installed systems, diagnose faults, and assist during commissioning phases.
- Support Quality Inspection (QI) activities, including:
- Weld Defect detection (Fusion stretch/undercut, pinholes, etc.)
- Magnetic Particle Testing (ISO18306) and Visual Inspection (ISO17078)
- Operate and maintain:
- Pipe-making centres / roll benders ( mothers/rollers)
- Welding machines (including automation-assisted mechanised welding)
- Quality inspection scopes for defect reporting
- Collaborate effectively with a team of pipe fitters, welders, and tradespeople to schedule, set-up, and execute piping activities.
- Receive tacit training in electrical-hydraulic testing, reinforced plastic repair, and applying insulation.

Requirements
Technical Competency
- Essential qualifications & experience:
- Able to comply with all Naval Shipbuilding industrial safety rules (e.g. ocean-going ferry permitting, TBI/boiler testing).
- Proven pipe fabrication experience (minimum 3 years).
- Welding certification (ISO9606-1 or BS EN ISO9606).
- Preferred jointing processes: MIG/MAG, SMAW, GTAW (TIG for specific civilian-military cases).
- Understand cold-bending techniques, especially in **large diameter�ds ( الأشعة إتصال النظام)).
- Engineering reading for schematics, **drafting knowledge ( AutoCADზე flexible pipe colaboration ).
- Awareness of Naval piping standards (BS7078, ISO) and Quality procedures (e.g. MIL-STD for weapon systems).

- Intermediate in Basic Shopmath and **Mathematics for metric/test pipe ## individuals.

- Ability to work independently or under supervisor instructions within tight deadlines.

Additional Requirements
- Must successfully complete BPSS Security Clearance (mandatory for site access).
Benefits
- Base wage: £18.55/hour (24.2 PA).
- Full-time permanent contract.
- 249.75 hours annual leave (prorated).
