Planning Administrator – Rochford District Council

Location: Rochford, Essex Contract: Part-Time, Temporary (6 Months Contract) Hours: 22.5 per week (3 days) Salary: £15.00 PAYE / £19.21 Umbrella Closing Date: Monday 6th July 2026

About the Role

Essex County Council (ECC), in partnership with Rochford District Council, are seeking a Planning Administrator for a part-time, temporary position.

Due to the role’s requirements, the successful candidate will need to work on-site at least one day per week. The primary location is: The Launch Pad, Cherry Orchard Business Park, Rochford, Essex.

Job Purpose

To support the delivery of a fair, efficient, and high-quality Development Management service, ensuring compliance with procedures, targets, and relevant policies. Core tasks include:

  • Validating planning applications according to:
    • National planning policies
    • Essex County Council’s adopted local plan policies
    • Council’s local planning frameworks

Key Accountabilities

  • Managing administrative aspects of planning applications and enforcement complaints, including:
    • Document handling (uploading and redaction) for planning systems (preferably via iDOX or equivalent)
  • Engaging with the public to address planning-related enquiries
  • Drafting emails, letters, and correspondence on planning and applicant matters
  • Staying updated on Planning legislation and government policies, implementing procedural changes as needed
  • Maintaining customer-focused relationships with stakeholders, including parish councils and local groups

Experience & Skills (What You Will Bring)

  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
  • Highly organised and attentive to detail
  • Computer literacy (proficient in Microsoft Office packages: Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and ideally a Digital Document Management System (DMS) like iDOX)
  • Capacity to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Self-motivated and self-confident
  • Familiarity with development management processes or local authority planning frameworks (desirable)
    • Understanding of national planning policy frameworks
