ABOUT THE JOB

Working within DCS (DCP and COMPASS)

As a Planning Content Editor for DCS (DP and COMPASS), you will develop and deliver high-quality editorial content that supports planning professionals in navigating planning law, policy and practice. Working across a broad range of topics, you will contribute to trusted, authoritative resources that inform thousands of practitioners across the sector, while deepening your expertise through continuous learning and engagement with the latest developments in planning.

The Role

This role involves producing and maintaining authoritative planning content for Development Control Practice (DCP) and COMPASS, including updating core guidance, writing appeal summaries, and contributing to specialist reports on key planning topics.

You will help ensure our content remains accurate, relevant and valuable to planning professionals across the public and private sectors. The role is suited to candidates with development management experience or graduates in planning, geography or related disciplines, and offers an excellent opportunity to progress towards RTPI membership or develop a career in planning.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Summarise and code planning appeals for the COMPASS database, ensuring accurate categorisation by development type, issues and procedure to support user searchability.
  • Research planning news, case law and appeal decisions, and update DCP content to ensure it remains current, accurate and authoritative.
  • Edit and maintain sections of the DCP guide, incorporating updates to planning policy, legislation and best practice.
  • Support the development of new and existing planning products, including contributing to in-depth research reports on key sector topics.
  • Contribute to quality assurance across COMPASS and DCP, ensuring consistency, accuracy and alignment of coding structures and content.

Key Relationships

Works closely with customer services, sales, marketing and technology teams to build effective working relationships, share knowledge, provide support and contribute to the successful delivery of business objectives.

  • An excellent understanding of current planning issues, policy and legislation within the UK planning system.
  • Awareness of key development management processes, appeal procedures and decision-making frameworks.
  • Understanding of how planning information is used and applied within a professional or publishing environment.
  • Interest in or awareness of the media, publishing or digital content sector
