Planning Manager

Manufacturing – Planning Manager (Operations Planning Function)

Location: Edinburgh (Hybrid), UK | Contract Type: Permanent

Leonardo have an exciting opportunity within the Operations Planning function for an experienced Manufacturing – Planning Manager, reporting to the Operations Planning Manager.


About the Role

The role of Planning Manager is to oversee end-to-end planning at Sector level, consolidating and coordinating plans beyond individual Line of Business (LOB) levels.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Support the validity and achievability of the Master Production Schedule (MPS) across multiple LOBs.
  • Optimise inventory levels, including safety stock, dead stock, and generic plant stocks.
  • Manage demand variability (for both internal production and external suppliers) and ensure robust master planning data.
  • Oversee Demand Management, including cleanup of overdue requisitions.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Planning & Cross-functional Collaboration

  • Proactively review all Sector-level plans and identify growth opportunities.
  • Chair the Hard Supply Review (Requisition Review) and engage with the Shop Floor Material Team to ensure best-practice execution.
  • Work with Manufacturing Project Manager/Project Leader, Team Leader, Procurement, and Procurement Lead to coordinate a unified manufacturing plan, covering materials, labour, and equipment at an aggregate level.

MPS & Forecasting

  • Develop and maintain the MPS for up to a 5-year forecast window.
  • Monitor firm projects, prospects, labour, material, and machinery capacity, ensuring the plan remains executable across timings.
  • Collaborate with Procurement to meet Material Requirements Planning (MRP) needs, including timeliness of requisitions.
  • Manage overdue Requisitions (REQs) for in-titute PoO materialise and expedite.
  • Accountable for tracking dead stock and adhering to Business Stock Optimisation (BSO) processes.

Inventory Management & Data Integrity

  • Review and manage safety stock levels across all LOBs using SAP, ensuring alignment with LOB low stock requirements and lean principles.
  • Lead Bill of Material (BOM) changes for production, including supplier notifications, excess management, and impact assessments for repairs/revisions.

Process Improvement & Monitoring

  • Introduce Supply Chain best practices and mitigate risks.
  • Lead the maintenance of rolling 6-month supply plans with stock projections.
  • Work with the Master Scheduler on demand forecasting improvements, including developing tools and automation.

Meetings and Governance

  • Chair weekly Demand & Supply meetings using newly implemented dashboards.
  • Lead monthly updates for the M&SC (Manufacturing & Supply Chain) Manager.
  • Manage Supplier changes through the Change Review Board (CRB) process.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Drive team capability through Personal Development Plans (PDPs).

Candidate Requirements

Unpack a willingness to learn, but preferred assets:

  • Advanced knowledge of Planning, MPS, and Inventory control (training may be provided).
  • Intellectual MRP (Demand & Supply) fundamentals.
  • Proficiency in systemic process management and alignment with lean manufacturing principles.
  • Stakeholder management, including influencing strategy.

Security Clearance

This role is subject to pre-employment vetting in line with UK Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS). Applicants may require an enhanced check against developed vetting (DV) eligibility.
