Overview

As a Planning Officer at Buckinghamshire Council, you’ll not only be offered a competitive benefits package, you’ll also be part of a team working on a broad range of projects, committed to shaping the future of Buckinghamshire for generations to come.

Career development is something we take seriously at Buckinghamshire Council; we love nothing more than seeing our colleagues grow with us, with many members of the team progressing quickly as they gain more experience and responsibilities within their specialist areas. We are committed to building an exceptional Development Management Team, utilising our colleagues’ talent, and making the most of what they have to offer. With a strong and supportive management team behind you, you’ll play a key part in helping us achieve our Planning and Environment Business plan and drive forward our vision as a unitary authority.

About Us

Buckinghamshire Council is a relatively new organisation that combines the strengths and expertise of the previous five councils in the county to create positive change for local people, communities, and businesses. We are firmly focused on the future and have made a clear commitment to serve residents better and to provide stronger representation for Buckinghamshire, both locally and nationally.

Our Planning, Growth and Sustainability directorate work with partners to help shape the future of Buckinghamshire. We deliver services on planning, economic growth, regeneration, strategic infrastructure, transport and property.

Our key priorities include developing the economic narrative for Bucks, creating more jobs and delivering the right infrastructure to help businesses and residents thrive. We also aim to provide a proactive planning service that is responsive, whilst making the best use of the Council’s land and property portfolio. This will in turn support community services and create housing, jobs, regeneration and income to support public services.

About The Role

Working as part of a friendly team you’ll manage a diverse caseload of planning applications and lead on providing high-quality service through all stages of the planning process, including pre-application and planning appeals.

The role will be based in the south of the County, in our Development Management Area Team 4, and will offer a wide range of opportunities across both urban and rural environments in Buckinghamshire. A full driving licence and access to a vehicle are therefore essential to the role. This is a highly rewarding and fulfilling role - you’ll see the impact of your work in front of you.

Faye, a Senior Planning Officer at Buckinghamshire Council, recently described her experience of working at Buckinghamshire:

"I have worked for Buckinghamshire Council for approximately five years. I initially started as a Graduate Planner and within six months of joining I was afforded the opportunity to progress to a Planning Officer, and have recently progressed to a Senior Planning Officer role. I work with an incredibly friendly and supportive team, who have helped me to grow my knowledge and skills as a Planner, gaining experience across a wide range of planning applications. The workload is varied which makes every day interesting; we are blessed that we work in a diverse area offering both rural and urban experiences. Alongside my work in Area Planning Team 1, covering the north of the County, I have also been very fortunate to have gained experience in the Majors Planning Team by co-working with colleagues on projects at Silverstone and the National Trust."

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
