Planning Technician

Grade 12 | £17,158–£19,236 per annum (22.2 hours per week) Closing date: 12 July 2026 Permanent, Part-Time | Hybrid Working Available


About the Role

The Planning Technician is a multi-skilled case officer responsible for validating, processing, and assessing a wide range of planning applications and service requests. You will provide technical and administrative support across the planning service, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, policies, and procedures.

As a key point of contact, you will deliver clear and accurate advice to customers, businesses, and colleagues, while efficiently managing enquiries and cases within statutory frameworks and service standards. You’ll also support service delivery through system administration, data management, consultation processes, and report production, applying judgment to resolve technical queries while maintaining high-quality systems in Planning, Enforcement & Appeals.

Central to this role is a strong focus on customer service, alongside contributing to continuous improvement and the delivery of a high-quality, collaborative planning service.


What You’ll Do – Key Responsibilities

  • Application & Case Management
    • Evaluate planning applications, plans, and reports, ensuring compliance with legislation.
    • Act as the main point of contact for customers, managing enquiries, investigations, and case resolutions with a strong focus on service excellence.

  • Administrative & System Support

    • Support service delivery via:
      • System administration, validation, and consultations.
      • Procurement, invoicing, and debt management.
      • Data management, reporting, FOI responses, and meeting support.
  • Legal & Policy Compliance

    • Stay updated with legislation, policy, and procedures to provide clear, practical advice.
    • Contribute to legal processes, including preparing statements and attending court where required.
  • Multi-Tasking & Collaboration

    • Manage a varied caseload of validation, appeals, enforcement cases, and technical queries.
    • Work collaboratively with customers, businesses, and partners to find solutions.
    • Prioritise competing demands and resolve complaints effectively.
  • System Enhancement & Training

    • Apply technical expertise to manage and resolve service requests in line with policy.
    • Maintain and improve key systems (Uniform and Acolad), ensuring compliance with evolving legislation.
    • Support system changes, maintain records, and provide guidance/training to colleagues.

What We’re Looking For – Knowledge, Experience & Skills

We’re seeking a candidate who can demonstrate:

  • Specialised Knowledge
    • Profound understanding of planning legislation; relevant work experience in case management.
    • Experience handling public enquiries and managing planning applications.

  • Technical & Data Skills

    • Experience working with databases and generating reports for performance/audit purposes.
    • Familiarity with financial/inventory systems and ability to work efficiently and accurately.
  • Qualifications

    • GCSE in English and Mathematics (or equivalent).
    • Educated to A-level standard (or equivalent).
  • Soft Skills & Attributes

    • Exceptional customer service and organisational skills.
    • Teamwork ability, strong communication skills.
    • Problem-solving and adaptability to prioritise demands in a fast-paced environment.
    • Empathy when handling difficult situations or public concerns.
    • Ability to innovate solutions and recognise when to escalate issues to senior officers.

Additional Information

  • Hybrid Working: Flexible arrangement allowing home work + in-office days (by agreement post-training).
  • Leave Entitlement: 28 days annual leave (pro-rata for part-time).
  • Candidate Note: Visa sponsorship not offered; applicants must have UK right-to-work status.
