Job Description

Based at our Energy from Waste facility in Slough, the Plant Attendant is responsible for supporting the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the plant. The role ensures continuous waste processing and energy generation in line with environmental permit conditions, HSE standards, and business requirements. The position also supports first-line maintenance and contributes to maintaining high levels of plant performance, availability, and reliability.

This position is offered on a 12-month fixed-term staff contract.

Key Responsibilities

The job duties listed are indicative and may vary based on business needs:

  • Operate EfW plant systems (including combustion, boiler, and flue gas treatment processes) in line with HSE standards and Environmental Permit conditions.
  • Monitor plant performance (e.g. temperatures, pressures, emissions) and respond to deviations to ensure safe and compliant operation.
  • Carry out routine inspections, logging, and first-line maintenance to support plant reliability and efficiency.
  • Identify and report defects, anomalies, and non-compliances, ensuring timely escalation and accurate documentation.
  • Support outages, maintenance activities, and environmental or safety investigations as required.

Qualifications

Qualifications & Training

  • Recognised qualification in an engineering or process-related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • Technical qualifications such as NVQ, City & Guilds, or similar are desirable.
  • Awareness of Environmental Permit requirements and emissions compliance is advantageous.
  • HSE-related training (e.g. IOSH, safety systems training) is beneficial.
  • Willingness to undertake further EfW-specific training and certifications.

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in EfW, power generation, or a similar heavy industrial/process environment.
  • Experience in a shift-based operations role within a continuous process plant.
  • Practical knowledge of combustion processes, steam systems, or flue gas treatment is desirable.
  • Experience working to strict environmental and HSE regulations.
  • Familiarity with DCS/control systems, fault finding, and plant reporting systems.
